Tokens

True Dungeon has set up a very handy online tool that gives OFFICIAL rulings on all Treasure Tokens. We make every effort to keep the TDb current and error-free, but if you find something that may need our attention, please let us know by posting in this forum thread which is dedicated to just that topic.

www.tokendb.com

The site has been designed to work well on your desktop, laptop and portable device. Not only is it a fast place to find out info about a specific token, but it also has some cool filter functions. The TDb is a cool tool for players and collectors--as both an instant info spot and a great research tool.

Big thanks to Dave Radtke for his years-long devotion to detailing tokens and for being the inspiration for the creation of the TDb.

If you want a fast run-down of the current year's token collection, check out the Quick Token Reference guide. It's a great tool for collectors, players, DMs, and Coaches to help familiarize themselves with the latest tokens. It also has a handy checklist of all available tokens for that year.

Quick Token Reference

We constructed a handy spreadsheet to help you classify and organize your Treasure Tokens so that you can process them for our Token Exchange Program. Click here or on the image above to download the file.

Note: Some browsers may require you to right-click on the spreadsheet's link and choose "Save link as" or something very similar-sounding to get the file.

True Dungeon Treasure Tokens have been a player favorite for ten years, and the popularity of collecting tokens keeps expanding every year.  One of the reasons for this popularity is the Token Exchange Program.  With this mail-in service, collectors are able to send in unwanted Treasure Tokens (mostly duplicate Commons and Uncommons) and exchange them for free limited-edition Trade, Reserve or Transmuted tokens. Most token exchange orders are processed in 1-2 business days and mailed back via USPS Priority Mail.

Trade Tokens: There are 12 different Trade tokens available to collectors. For example, a collector can send in 25 units of Ring tokens and receive back a free Philosopher's Stone Trade token. There is a Trade token available for almost all unwanted tokens--if a collector has a sufficient quantity to fulfill the recipe. These Trade tokens can be traded with other collectors or turned in as part of a recipe for a Transmuted Token.

Reserve Tokens: There are three different Reserve tokens. They come in 1,000 GP (gold pieces), 5,000 GP, or 25,000 GP values. For example, a collector could send in a variety of low-denomination tokens that have varying GP values. If all the submitted tokens' total GP value is 1,000, the collector receives back a free 1,000 GP Gold Bar. Reserve tokens can be used to facilitate the trading of large sums of gold pieces and are also required in certain recipes for Transmuted tokens.

Transmuted Tokens: There are many different types of Transmuted tokens, some of which are some of the most rare and powerful tokens available. Each Transmuted token has its own unique recipe. When a collector sends in all the tokens in a recipe, they get that particular limited-edition Transmuted token back for free. Most Transmuted token recipes expire after about two years. After the creation window closed, that token can never be made again. However, there are some (including all Legendaries) whose recipe never expires. The most powerful Transmuted tokens may require a collector to gather the necessary tokens for several years, but in the end the collector winds up with a very rare and powerful token!

Frequently Asked Questions

Let's say I have the following to trade in for several Philosopher's Stones:
     12 Rare Rings, etc (12 × 6 pts = 72pts)
     1 Uncommon Ring (3pts)
     Total 75, or 3 Stones
How should these tokens be bagged as it's not an easy division of tokens for each into 25 pts?

Answer: Please try to avoid this situation if possible. If you cannot, in the above example please place 24 pts of tokens separately in 3 bags, and then place the left-over 3 pts token in a separate non-labeled bag. Then, take all four bags and place them together in a larger ziplock bag. This is how we will know that this special case has occurred.

What's the deal with these 10× Trade tokens?

Answer: To make it easier for token collectors to store and ship some of the more common Trade tokens, we now offer larger denominations of the Trade 1 tokens. Each 10× Trade token is differentiated from its standard version by a light tan "peanut butter" back and a large "10×" emblazoned over the item's image. 10× Trade tokens are treated exactly like ten of their standard versions. They can be used in recipes that require 10 or more of that item. For example, if a recipe required 11 Minotaur Hide tokens, you could submit one 10× Minotaur Hides and one Minotaur Hide to fulfil that requirement.

When ordering ten or more of a Trade 1 token, you indicate which denominations you'd like to receive. For example, if you're sending in enough clothing items to make 32 Mystic Silks, you could order three as 10× and two as standard, one 10× and twenty-three standard, or any combination that totals 32.

Can I convert my existing standard Trade tokens into 10× versions?

Answer: Yes. Simply order whichever quantity of 10× tokens you'd like and send in the appropriate number of standard versions.

You can also convert 10× into standard versions.

How do I prepare the bags for 10× Trade tokens?

Answer: Bag your tokens exactly the same way you would if you were ordering ten of the standard versions. For example, if you're making a 10× Dwarven Steels token, you'd submit ten separate bags, each containing 25 Common weapon tokens. Do not send in one bag containing 250 Common weapons. The same goes for point-based Trade tokens. For example, if you're making a 10× Philosopher's Stones token, you'd submit ten separate bags, each containing 25 points worth of jewelry or wands. Do not send in one bag containing 250 points worth of jewelry or wands.

When is the cut-off date for sending in tokens for exchange prior to a convention?

We MUST receive your shipment two weeks before the start of the convention if you want to receive it back before that convention. All orders RECEIVED less than two weeks before a convention get processed around a week after we return from that convention.

Can I send more than one of the same type of transmute in the same bag?

  • Example: Enough tokens to make 3 of the trade tokens for Dwarven Steel in one bag? Or do I need to break them down into 3 bags?

Answer: It depends on the type of Trade Tokens you're exchanging.

  • Standard: For all weapon and/or armor Trade tokens (Dwarven Steel, Minotaur Hide, Elven Bismuth, Oil of Enchantment, and Aragonite), please place them in separate bags. To make 3 Dwarven Steel tokens, you would need 3 different ziplock bags, each containing 25 Common weapon tokens.
  • Optional: For all point-based Trade tokens (Alchemist's Ink, Alchemist's Parchment, Darkwood Plank, Enchanter's Munition, Minotaur Hide, Mystic Silk, and Philosopher's Stone), you may put exactly 25 Uncommons ("×3") or exactly 25 Rares ("×6") in a single bag, but they must be marked accordingly. Let's say you're submitting a single bag of 25 Rare jewelry tokens, thus ordering 6 Philosopher's Stone tokens. Take 1 (one) Philosopher's Stone label and manually write "×6" on it. Take that single "Philosopher's Stone ×6" slip and place it in the bag (text side facing out so it can be easily read) of 25 Rare jewelry tokens. If you were to submit 25 Uncommon jewelry items, you'd write "×3" on the Philosopher's Stone slip.
    • Please do not put more than one slip in a bag.
    • Please do not utilize this optional method if you have mixed rarities in the bag or with any quantity of tokens other than 25. This means, for example, do not put 23 Uncommons and 1 Rare in a bag. If you don't have exactly 25 Rares of the same category or exactly 25 Uncommons of the same category, please use the standard bagging method of one Trade token per bag.
  • When submitting tokens to be exchanged for Trade items, please do not put more than 25 tokens in a single snack-size bag. It slows down the verification process and the bags tend to split.

We ask you to follow these procedures to speed up the fulfillment process and make it much more error-free.

Can I send in for more than one Transmuted Token in one shipment to TD?

  • Example 1 : From above, if they have to be seperate bags, can I stick many ziplock bags into one box?
  • Example 2 : I have one of every type of Trade Token, each in their own bag, can I stick that in one box?

Answer: Yes. You can put any number of different kinds of ziplock bags in any Small Flat Rate box. Just be sure the appropriate bag-tag label is placed inside each bag.

Can I send in a token with charges if there are no charges remaining?

Answer: No. Charged items (e.g., wands printed before 2018, Ioun Stone Violet Prism, etc.) with no remaining charges may not be exchanged. If there is at least one charge left, it may be exchanged--as long as it was exchangable to begin with.

If I want to transmute a token but I don’t yet have all the required Trade item ingredients, can I just send in the equivalent tokens so I only have to make one shipment?

Answer: To fulfil a Transmuted token’s recipe, you must provide the exact items the recipe calls for--not the equivalent in "raw" tokens. E.g., if you want to make a recipe that requires one Elven Bismuth, you must send in an Elven Bismuth token, not 25 Uncommon weapons in its place. This still applies if you are also making Trade tokens for future exchange. You may not send in (as an example) 50 Uncommon weapons and request that one of those two Elven Bismuths be applied to a recipe in the same shipment. Long story short, you’ll need to make two shipments: the first one where you send in for all the Trade and/or Reserve tokens you need, and then a second shipment where you submit the exact recipe the Transmuted token you want calls for.

Why are we being "meanies" like this? The process has been designed to eliminate errors and confusion. It’s quite perplexing to try and interpret the convoluted schemes some collectors concoct. Rather than attempting to decipher twists, turns, and multi-layer cross-references, we want to keep these transactions as simple and uncomplicated as possible. This results in far fewer errors and reduces the number of angry emails from people whose convoluted orders got mixed up.

We realize this situation is not a perfect one, but we feel strongly that this is the best way to handle it. We think avoiding confusion and reducing errors is worth the added inconvenience. We understand it costs more in shipping this way (for both of us), but we think an orderly exchange is ultimately best for all parties.

There is an option available in the TD Store to "order" one or more Trade tokens. This "ordering" is not actually buying the specific tokens (which is NOT possible), it just starts the process for collectors to convert extra tokens into Trade tokens. The website guides collectors through the online forms, instructs you to print out an address label & packing slip, and provides a checklist of the Trade tokens the player expects to have mailed back. All of this is then mailed to TD HQ. Your transaction is normally processed 1-2 business days after it's received. There is a low-cost, flat shipping fee for US destinations, regardless of the size of your order. Destinations outside the US have higher shipping costs. If you wish to purchase new tokens as well as send in old tokens to be converted to Trade, we'll gladly ship both lots simultaneously for the same fee.

You can only get Trade tokens by using the online ordering system or at select in-person events. Trade tokens are not available during Gen Con. Mail-in Trade exchanges temporarily cease two weeks before and one week after every in-person event. Other than the aforementioned blackout periods, Trade tokens may be exchanged year-round.

All orders sent to collectors are shipped via USPS Priority Mail with Confirmation Delivery service, usually within 1-2 business days. Most orders arrive within 2-3 business days once shipped. We may occasionally run out of stock, but if that happens we will notify you of the delay and expected restock date.

We highly recommend you send us your Trade token shipment with some kind of tracking! True Adventures, Ltd. is NOT responsible for any tokens lost in the mail while in route to TD HQ.

(Click to Begin)

Below is the list of all Trade tokens and which tokens are required to make them. When converting Weapon or Armor tokens into trade goods, exactly 25 tokens of that particular type are required. Non-Armor and non-Weapon tokens use a point-based system that requires 25 points of tokens to make one Trade Token. The point-value of a token is determined by the formula below:

Point Conversion for non-Weapon/Armor:
Rare = 6 points
Uncommon = 3 points
Common = 1 point

For example:

  • 25 Common tokens (of a certain type) makes 25 points
  • 8 Uncommon tokens + 1 Common token makes 25 points
  • 2 Rare tokens + 3 Uncommon tokens + 4 Common tokens make 25 points

Alchemist's Ink: 25 points of any Potion, Elixir, Salve, or Oil

Alchemist's Parchment: 25 points of any Scroll

Aragonite: 25 of any Rare Weapon and/or Armor

For the purpose of converting to Trade tokens, "weapon" does not include ammunition (arrows, bolts, bullets, or sling stones, etc.)

Starting with the 2022 print run, anything that equips in the Torso slot counts as armor. This change is not retroactive. Older Torso items made out of cloth (e.g., robes) keep their previous conversion designation.

For a complete list of which tokens are considered a "weapon" or "armor", please reference the Trade Token Worksheet.

Darkwood Plank: 25 points of any Gear and/or Item

In general, if a token does not fit in any of the other categories and is eligible for exchange, it goes in the Darkwood Plank category.

For a complete list of which tokens are eligible for Darkwood Plank exchange, please reference the Trade Token Worksheet.

Dwarven Steel: 25 of any Common Weapon

For the purpose of converting to Trade tokens, "weapon" does not include ammunition (arrows, bolts, bullets, or sling stones, etc.)

Elven Bismuth: 25 of any Uncommon Weapon

For the purpose of converting to Trade tokens, "weapon" does not include ammunition (arrows, bolts, bullets, or sling stones, etc.)

For a complete list of which tokens are considered "weapons", please reference the Trade Token Worksheet.

Enchanter's Munition: 25 points of any Ammunition (Arrow, Bolt, Bullet, Sling Stone, Slug, etc.)

Shurikens and Alchemical weapons are not Ammunition. For a complete list of which tokens are considered "ammunition", please reference the Trade Token Worksheet.

Golden Fleece: 10 of any Monster Trophy token (any year or combination of years).

Monster Trophies (Ingredients) can only be obtained by drawing them from the Random Treasure Boxes at the end of a True Dungeon adventure.

For a complete list of Monster Trophies, please reference the Trade Token Worksheet.

Minotaur Hide: 25 of any Common Armor

Starting with the 2022 print run, anything that equips in the Torso slot counts as armor. This change is not retroactive. Older Torso items made out of cloth (e.g., robes) keep their previous conversion designation.

For a complete list of which tokens are considered "armor", please reference the Trade Token Worksheet.

Mystic Silk: 25 points of Cloaks, Clothing, Bracers*, Girdles, Belts, or Gloves

*In general, "Bracers" (plural) are considered clothing and a "Bracer" (singular) is a weapon.

For a complete list of which tokens are eligible to be exchanged for Mystic Silk, please reference the Trade Token Worksheet.

Oil of Enchantment: 25 of any Uncommon Armor

Starting with the 2022 print run, anything that equips in the Torso slot counts as armor. This change is not retroactive. Older Torso items made out of cloth (e.g., robes) keep their previous conversion designation.

For a complete list of which tokens are considered "armor", please reference the Trade Token Worksheet.

Philosopher's Stone: 25 points of any Amulet, Bracelet*, Earcuff, Earring, Circlet, Crown, Necklace, Ring, or Wand

*Not to be confused with "Bracers" or "Bracer"

For a complete list of which tokens are eligible to be exchanged for Philosopher's Stone, please reference the Trade Token Worksheet.

Can I convert my existing standard Trade tokens into 10× versions?

Answer: Yes. Simply order whichever quantity of 10× tokens you'd like and send in the appropriate number of standard versions. But you are not required to convert into standard trade tokens before converting them to 10×. You may convert directly from regular (not Trade) tokens into 10× without needing to convert to standard Trade tokens as a middle step.

There is an option available in the TD Store to "order" one or more Reserve Bar tokens. This "ordering" is not actually buying the specific tokens (which is NOT possible), it just starts the process for collectors to convert smaller units of tokens with a GP value into larger (and less back-straining) denominations, referred to as Reserve Bar tokens. The website guides collectors through the online forms, instructs you to print out an address label & packing slip, list the total GP value of the tokens to be shipped to TD, and the total GP value of all the Reserve Bar tokens the player expects to have mailed back.

All of this is then mailed to TD HQ. Your transaction is normally processed 1-2 business days after it's received. There is a flat $10.00 shipping fee for domestic destinations or $30.00 for international. If you wish to purchase new tokens as well as convert small GP-value tokens to Reserve Bars, we'll gladly ship both lots simultaneously for the same fee.

You can only get Reserve Bar tokens by using the online ordering system or at select in-person events. Reserve Bar tokens are not available during Gen Con. Mail-in Reserve Bar exchanges temporarily cease two weeks before and one week after every in-person event. These are the three currently available Reserve Bar tokens:

In 2012 we added a new mechanic for treasure tokens: Transmuted Tokens. Tokens previously known as Combo and Artifact tokens all now fall under the Transmuted token umbrella. Transmuted tokens are like the old Combo tokens in that you turn in multiple "ingredients" to make a new, more powerful token.

(RIGHT: This is what happens when loose zip-top bags are shipped without being put inside smaller boxes!)

We get it, this is a lot to read. But it is VERY important that you follow the instructions below regarding how to package your tokens for mailing in the Token Exchange Program. You can save yourself a lot of heartache by making sure your tokens are properly packaged. Tokens are heavy, and if they are shipped loose in a box, they usually break open the box. We are very keen to avoid situations where we have to contact collectors and tell them that they are only getting half of their requested Exchange tokens back because their box tore open during shipping.

USPS Priority Mail – Flat Rate Boxes

We only use USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes to mail out our tokens. We strongly recommend you do the same as their value is hard to beat. In addition to the postage being same price no matter how heavy the box's contents, the boxes themselves are free! The below instructions assume that you are going to use one or more of the following USPS Priority Flat Rate boxes:

  • Small Flat Rate box (ID# SFRB) Can hold up to ~175 tokens
  • Medium Flat Rate box (ID# FRB1) Holds up to 6 Small Flat Rate boxes
  • Large Flat Rate box (ID# LARGEFRB) Holds up to 9 Small Flat Rate boxes

A Small Flat Rate Box (FRB) fits tightly inside Medium or Large FRBs, so we highly recommend that you first place all your SNACK SIZE zip-top bags of tokens inside a Small FRB before securing them inside the bigger boxes (if needed). Make sure the box is filled with something sturdy that provides structural support when heavy things are placed on your box. (During shipment, something very heavy absolutely will get placed on top of your box, most likely at high velocity.) The easiest/cheapest is to fill the rest of the box with more Small FRBs. Six Small FRBs fit perfectly within a Medium FRB and nine Small FRBs fit in a Large FRB.

The first step is to be sure to place each group of ~25 tokens in a SNACK SIZE zip-top bag with the proper label facing out. This group of tokens is what you would normally be turning in for one Trade, Reserve, or Transmuted token. Sometimes, you might turn in more than 25 tokens for a single token. If so, a larger zip-top bag is required. Just pack all your ~25 recipe tokens into that larger zip-top bag and place the label inside it--print side facing out.

You can fit approximately 175 tokens inside a Small FRB box from the USPS. This equates to approximately 1,050 tokens for a Medium FRB and 1,575 tokens in a Large FRB.

Always ship the tokens loose inside the zip-top bag. Do not tape or roll them together.

(Here are 175 tokens [organized with labels] inside a Small Flat Rate box.)

The second step is to close & seal the Small FRBs and then place them inside either a Medium or Large FRB--if you are sending in more than ~175 tokens. If you don’t place the maximum number of Small FRBs inside the bigger box, be sure to tape around the perimeter of the top of the smaller boxes inside the larger box. This secures the smaller boxes and prevents them from moving around during shipping. However, you must still fill the rest of your box with something sturdy to resist being crushed.

(Here are 6 Small FRBs inside a Medium FRB)

(Here are 9 Small FRBs inside a Large FRB)

(Here is an example of how Small FRBs should be taped inside partially filled Medium FRBs--but don't forget to fill the rest of the box up for structural integrity.)

The third step is to be certain you've enclosed the required Token Exchange Program documents, then close and seal the box with tape. Whether you are sending a single Small FRB or a larger box, it is VERY IMPORTANT to tape the outside of the box well. Be sure to cover all seams with good quality packing tape, and please double-reinforce the seam on the side. That seam tends to split apart with the greatest frequency. (see first photo at the top of this page)

The final step is to affix the shipping label that was printed out in your Token Exchange Program documents. Please use tape to secure the label to the box so that the label is completely covered. This ensures the label won't get torn during shipping.

We recommend that you spend the extra few bucks and make use of the Signature Confirmation service. This helps to protect your shipment.

NEVER send tokens in a paper envelope! Please use a sturdy box or heavy-duty mailer. USPS Priority boxes are FREE when you use USPS Priority Mail to send in your tokens.

Below is a properly taped and addressed shipment of Exchange tokens (Trade, Reserve, or Transmuted). Three strips of high-quality packing tape are used along the top and bottom (middle seam) of the box. More tape is added along all four corner edges. Finally, use tape to secure the address label to the box--completely covering the label.

NOTE: If you prefer, you can go to usps.com to print your own label. Doing so may save you some money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I send more than one of the same type of transmute in the same bag? For example, can I send in enough tokens to make three Dwarven Steel in one bag? Or do I need to break them down into 3 bags?
It depends on the type of Trade Tokens you're exchanging.

  • Standard: For all weapon and/or armor Trade tokens (Dwarven Steel, Minotaur Hide, Elven Bismuth, Oil of Enchantment, and Aragonite), please place them in separate bags. To make 3 Dwarven Steel tokens, you would need 3 different zip-top bags, each containing 25 Common weapon tokens.

  • Example 1 : From above, if they have to be separate bags, can I stick many zip-top bags into one box?
  • Example 2 : I have one of every type of Trade Token, each in their own bag, can I stick that in one box?

Yes. You can put any number of different kinds of zip-top bags in any Small Flat Rate box. Just be sure the appropriate printed-out label is placed inside each bag.

Let's say I have the following to trade in for several Philosopher's Stones:
     12 Rare Rings, etc. (12 × 6 pts = 72pts)
     1 Uncommon Ring (3pts)
     Total 75, or 3 Stones
How should these tokens be bagged as it's not an easy division of tokens for each into 25 pts?

Please try to avoid this situation if possible. If you cannot, in the above example please place 24 pts of tokens separately in 3 bags, and then place the left-over 3 pts token in a separate non-labeled bag. Then, take all four bags and place them together in a larger zip-top bag. This is how we will know that this special case has occurred.

If I want to transmute a token but I don’t yet have all the required Trade item ingredients, can I just send in the equivalent tokens so I only have to make one shipment?
To fulfill a Transmuted token’s recipe, you must provide the exact items the recipe calls for—not the equivalent in "raw" tokens.

Dave Radtke put together a nice "yearbook" of each token collection by year--going all the way back to 2003 when we only sold about 100 packs at Gen Con So Cal--up to and including tokens from 2017.

Token Yearbook (2003-2017)

If you're preparing an order for Trade, Reserve, and/or Transmuted tokens to be exchanged at an in-person event, please use this order form and include a filled-out, signed, and dated copy with the tokens you turn in. This download includes all the forms, checklists, and bag tags you'll need for your token exchange order.

This form is not to be used with mail-in orders--even if you're picking them up in person. If you're going to mail your tokens in, you need to place your order through the Token Exchange Program page.

For Speedy Service

If you want to expedite your in-person token exchange process, here are some things you can do to make the exchange process go faster:

  1. Fill out your paperwork now so it's ready the instant you walk into the transmuting room. You can download the form here.
  2. Do not forget to include your verified recipe checklist(s) along with your completed & signed order form when you turn in your submission. A full and complete recipe checklist is not optional.
  3. Fill out the form legibly. Don't write so you can read it, write so a stranger can read it.
  4. Organize your bags. Specifically:
  • Face all your tokens in the same direction.
    · For recipes whose total ingredients number in the single-digits, don't worry about facing them. Keeping two or three tokens aligned and ordered in a bag is nearly impossible.
  • Whenever possible, don't make bags with lots of free-floating tokens. Obviously, this doesn't apply to bags of tokens numbering in the single digits.
  • When submitting a Transmute, place the tokens in the bag in the same order they are on the recipe checklist.
  • When submitting a Transmute whose recipe requires more tokens than can fit in a single snack size bag (looking at you, relics and legendaries), fill multiple snack size bags and then put all of those smaller bags in a single larger bag. Again, keeping the tokens in checklist order really helps.
  • Make sure the tag you put in each bag is facing out so it can be read before the bag is opened.
  • Do not put more than one tag in a bag. This is particularly true if you're making a 3× or a 6× bag. Do not put three or six tags in one bag. Put in one slip with 3× or 6× written after the Trade token's name. See the FAQ near the bottom of this page for details about 3× and 6× bags.
  • Keep like items together. E.g., if you're making 20 each of DP, AI, and MS, grouping all the DP together, all the AI together, and all the MS together helps.
  • Use printed, not hand-written bag tags. If you want to create your own tags, that's fine, but use a plain font that's at least 14 points in size.
  • Do not tape your bags shut.
  • Do not "roll" your tokens in a manner similar to how one might receive bulk change from a bank.

Assuming you've read this far, you may be saying to yourself, "Sheesh! That's a lot to take in!" Indeed, it is. As mentioned above, these are tips for people who want to maximize efficiency.
