Noob questions-very basic 4 years 10 months ago #1

2019 will be my first True Dungeon experience (at GenCon, that I've attended for the past 10 years or so). I've experienced the 'shell-shock' others have mentioned about token prices. When I signed up, I didn't know anything about the tokens or their uses. I have learned a great deal in the past few weeks. I've read the TD PHB. I've bought a few 10-packs from TD. But...I still have questions.....
1. Those tokens labeled 'one use'...what happens to those? Does the DM collect them? Are they returned to their owners(after all, I did pay for mine).
2. If you equip with a bow, sling, crossbow, et.al., is ammunition implied? Arrows, bolts, darts with special abilities..are they returned to their owners onced used?
I can see having a bag or something labeled for the person's class to put expended stuff in to return after the adventure,,,but are they? Or do we lose them outright?
Not smart questions, but I've looked around quite a bit for answers and haven't found any. I'm signed up for all the tutorial classes at GenCon....

1. One use items (consumables) like potions and scrolls are collected by the dm; they are not returned. Once per dungeon items are not.
2. Ordinary ammo is assumed to be used with bows, crossbows and slings. There is one use ammo that can be used with these type of weapons to increase damage or chance to hit.

Once you use a disposable token such as a potion, scroll, ammo it is gone. The same for runestones, totems, and probably other things I’m forgetting

Just a general note about tokens. When you arrive and check in with your ticket (electronic at Gencon), you will receive a 10-pack of tokens. Playing at the Normal level, it is very possible to run with just the 10-pack you receive with your ticket. Some cooperation among the players makes it easier, to make sure everyone has an applicable weapon, and some armor, but otherwise no other tokens are needed.

Many people augment the token pack with purchased tokens, that allow you to play at harder levels. Hardcore is recommended to use primarily Rares. (only 1 rare per pack). Nightmare is recommended with mostly Ultra-Rare tokens, which turn up in about 1 in 100 packs. Epic was added this year, and is recommended to use mostly Relic and Legendary tokens, which are transmutes. As you can guess, the more rare the token, the more expensive it is, but all this is optional. Especially for new players, I would recommend you keep the token buying minimal until you run a couple times. Normal level includes all the same puzzles and combat, just at an easier level. You can even run Non-Lethal, which guarantees your character to live until the last room. Learn the game, and any token buying will make more sense after playing a run or two.

If you are curious about what tokens are out there, a link below will take you to Amorgens spreadsheet, that allows you to build characters with different tokens. It will give you an idea of the different slots and what type of gear fits in each. The spreadsheet is a free download.

Have fun!

Welcome! I hope you enjoy playing at GenCon.

As jedibcg said, a base level of ammo is implied with bows, slings, etc. That base level is reflected in the damage wheel on the weapon. If you decide to use additional ammo, you are required to turn it in before your slide (no waiting to see if it was a hit or not). The DM will keep it and it won’t leave the room with you.

The spreadsheet Cranston mentioned is a great way to play around with different options for a character. You could take the purchased 10-packs and figure out the best options with what you already have. Also, it could give you a short “wish list” of things you hope to draw from the 10-pack you will get when you play. If you don’t get any of that stuff, you can set aside the 10-pack and not worry about it in the coaching room (other than maybe trading with the other members of your party if you can help them).

As others have said, there’s no need to buy more tokens at this point. You will be more prepared with more tokens than many first-time players. (Congrats!) Play a few times and see if you like it. If you do, you’ll have a much better idea of how you can get the best bang for your buck by purchasing additional specific tokens.

from the PHB > Appendix 2: Identifying Tokens:
Scrolls and Potions must be turned in when used. In addition, any token that says "One use" must be handed over to the DM or Coach when used.

Angela D Cabrera wrote: 2. If you equip with a bow, sling, crossbow, et.al., is ammunition implied?

PHB > Combat > Ranged:
Ammo-firing ranged weapons are assumed to have an infinite supply of mundane ammo.

Angela D Cabrera wrote: Arrows, bolts, darts with special abilities..are they returned to their owners onced used?

PHB > Combat > Ranged:
Ammo tokens are consumables and must be turned in to use.

Angela, I genuinely applaud you for seeking out the answers to your questions. There is a ton of TD-related material and it's really easy to miss some of the minutiae. I've given you links to the aforementioned points not to shame you but to give you the opportunity to verify I'm not just talking about my posterior. :)

Also, signing up for TD 101 is a stellar idea. It's a wonderful, free resource that I wish more folks would avail themselves of. Kudos to you. And welcome to the Wonderful World of True Dungeon!

Welcome to True Dungeon and the forums Angela! Everyone is offering some great advice. There are no dumb questions and we are all love to talk about the game so feel free to ask any question you may have. If there is a question you have that you don't feel like posting you can private message myself or there will be others willing to lend a hand.

Don't be too worried about gear and token prices. You will be able to experience the game at the base level of difficulty with little to no gear.

Since you noted that you are running through an adventure at Gencon I would suggest looking up if there are any other individuals in the forums in that time slot. If there are often people can coordinate classes and plan out the adventure and could possibly lend some gear.

If you signed up for Odins redux dungeon, I’m not sure if your able to use more than the one pack that they give you. Anyone know thus answer?

From the Gen Con 2019 page:
In keeping with the "sealed" theme, and to keep the fun more light and new-player friendly, no outside Treasure Tokens may be used. Parties may only use the tokens found in their free starter 10-packs of Treasure Tokens.

Welcome Angela!

The True Dungeon 101 seminars are a great way to get a picture of what it will be like.

I think you've already gotten the answers you asked, but I want to confirm for question 2 - you are assumed to have unlimited mundane ammo for ranged bows, slings, crossbows, etc.

Given the amount of research you've put in, you already know more than most.

Hi Angela!

If you already have a few token packs, you already have everything you need for a potential successful run on normal. My very first run was with a group of entirely new players, and everyone had 1 pack except for me - I bought 5 additional packs at the kiosk right outside of TD. We successfully made it through the dungeon on normal, without only one casualty in the last room.

If you haven't looked at the character cards yet, I suggest flipping through those to see if there is a class you want to play. It helps to know your class abilities during the dungeon without having to read your card in the heat of the moment.

I will also echo Justice on looking up up your adventure slot in the forums - if there is a thread, you can start coordinating now and you can get some nice discussion in with your party in advance. If there is no thread, feel free to start one :) I also recommend getting to the TD room 20 to 30 minutes in advance for your first run, as there will likely be plenty to discuss with your party members.
