TOPIC: I hate Pepsi

I'm confused.  Do you sit on the divan, the sofa, or the couch to drink your soda, or pop, or tonic, or soda pop, or soft drink, or rat poison, I mean soft drink.

While Hikming the Appalachian Trail, they crossed into Maryland from the south, and didn't realize the Significant language barrier that rests roughly along the Potomac River.  Entering a resteraunt they spent 15 minutes trying to order, being unable to speak the "correct" terms for what they wished.. The order? "2 sodas, 2 burgers, and we'd like to charge it"<br /><br />I still laugh about the whole thing

I take my beverage while on the "recliner" most times.

My sister-in-law in Dallas claims it's neither pop nor soda, it's coke.  If you order a coke in a restaurant, they'll ask you "What kind of coke?  We got pepsi, diet pepsi, sprite, and root beer".  Snort.  I always knew that Texas wasn't truly part of the US.<br />

That's not just Texas, that's much of the South.<br />

<br /><br /> the waitress didn't know what a soda was.. what a burger was, or that charging it refered to use of a credit card.<br /><br />they had to order it as 2 soda's ( they tried asking fior a "coke" and the waitress said they only had pepsi..)<br />2 Hamburgers w cheese ( not cheeseburgers)<br />and the had to put it on their Caard (extra "a" for emphasis)

<br /><br />Language and dialects are fascinating.  I took a class a very long time ago, so I hope I remember things right, but it was about the roots of the dialects in the US.  I was amazed to learn that British scholars have come to the US to study some areas of Appalachia because they feel the dialect closely represents how English was spoken in England in the 1600s and 1700s--word patterns, inflections etc.  I was surprised when an individual spoke with a southern accent (different from Appalachia) and with just slight inflection changes became very British.  The southern accent is actually very close to England's English.  Language is amazing.<br /><br />Be careful ordering coke in California, Oregon, or Washington.  They might give you white powder with a straw.

Other regionalisms include how coffee is treated (Is "coffee light" coffee with or without cream?) and how one refers to a long sandwich filled with meat, cheese, and other condiments.<br />

I have fond memories of nearly this exact conversation when I was in the military.  The first time you realize that not everybody thinks / talks the same as you do.... Pity more folks can't seem to realize that now a days.
