I personally gon't mind if they release a new version every 5 years as long as the new edition is better than the last.  I love 2nd edition but come on, you have to concede that 3rd edition makes alot more sense and is alot easier to play.  What they are selling for 4th edition is that the game will run better and play won't stop to look up rules.  If it is true I will buy it.

Now, this has got me thinking... I've never had the chance to play DnD 3.5 but I really wanted to get into, all hardcore and whatnot. But  now I'm thinking "Anyone I try to game with will be so much more learned in the ways of 3.5 than me... I'ma feel like a loser either way." So I'm trying to decide if I want to devote my efforts to 3.5 an catch up with everyone else... or start with 4th and be in the lead, maybe.<br /><br />Any thoughts on that?

<br />Depends on when you want to start.  4th edition doesn't come out till next year.<br /><br />The best thing about 3rd edition and up is the OGL.  That means that starting at 3rd edition you really don't have to buy anything if you are just a casual player.  You can get most of the rules free at www.d20srd.org

I also have to say, that if you are gaming with a group that thinks you are a loser because you haven't memorized gazillions of little 3.5 rules, then you should find another group.  Most all groups I have played with are more than willing to show you the ropes as it were.  I have played about 100 rounds of Living Greyhawk in the last few years (not that much compared to a lot), and I didn't even open the combat section of the Players Handbook for over a year.  People just coached me along when necessary.

<br /><br />Indeed any mature group should know, it's roleplaying not ruleplaying.

Bah, you can't count on things like that, for people to feel bad about their own ineptness. It's too hit or miss. It's better to have weekly rules quizes and then something sufficiently shaming for those who fail to pass. Maybe something a la KoDT. The walk of a thousand 4-siders.

Sweet.  Can we have that as one of the rooms in '08?  People will question their choice of footwear every year after...

<br /><br />Oh quit it, you.   But I know how you feel.  I feel like that whenever my friends talk about WarMachine - I used to play, but never quite had all the rules down as well as they did.<br />Make up for any lack of knowledge you might have with awesome role-playing!  Just have fun.<br />

<br /><br />I have been a gamer for a long time.  I love swapping stories about different things that have happenned to other players characters and my characters.  The one thing I can't stand is someone who wants to talk ad-nasuem about game mechanics and how to build characters that have the most crunch.  It really makes me want to say "Boy, it's been great talking to you but I am gonna move on now cause you have missed the point of gaming alltogether."<br /><br />Get together, throw some dice, tell great stories, have some fun.<br /><br />NOT memorize every rulebook, build a monster, point out mistakes, humiliate those who don't.

I have to state my husband is a ruleslawyer but one rule that our gaming group instituted was if you question the DM do so after the game. Otherwise whatever they say goes and you don't interrupt the flow of the game. Of course my husband is also usually the DM because he is good at telling stories and knows all the rules.<br /><br />Me personally I can not be bothered to memorize rules that only apply to a game where everyone else knows them anyways. I have no problem asking my friends what the rule about such and such is because I know they'll know it. On that note I have to laugh because when Raven started up a 3.0 DnD game I became the ruleslawyer that everyone asked questions of. Mainly because it was alot of first time gamers and I was the only one with experience with 3.0. So you know what the rules don't matter as long as you have fun playing the game. Raven is notorious for making up rules on the spot to suit whatever she is doing at the time. Lol. <br /><br />Lady Myke
