We were talking about this at work (yeah, essential, so no time off). Even though I gots to go to work, evenings are a bit, more - well -empty. So that means plop in a movie and zone out. Even though I have lots and lots of DVD's, usually only a handful get played when I want to zone out. So, what movies fall into your "must-have" or "go to" category that other people would respond with "What? Seriously? Why that one?"
For example my wife will inevitably choose "Rosemary's Baby" or "Star Trek One" as her zone out-go to's.

Me, It would have to be "Battle Los Angeles". I just LOVE that movie. When I want to watch something, and don't know what I want to watch, thats the one I grab. Maybe its the fake news broadcasts at the from, maybe its the war movie with all the classic tropes that they can't do anymore.
Whatever it is, it gets played a disturbing amount of times, and I don't think it would be on anyones "Top 100" film list.

Anyone else have odd movies they can't live without?

I tend to really love movies that have that hidden gem of wisdom.

usual suspects - how do you shoot the devil in the back? what if you miss?
Kelly's heroes - everyone gets an equal share.
star wars - from a certain point of view.
-?- if you keep knocking on doors looking for the devil, what are you going to do if he answers?

you get the idea.

I like B-movies for zoning out, I don't have to put effort in to thinking.

I’ve got 3:

Bill and Ted’s excellent Adventure most of the time. It’s not too serious and generally quote able.

Hackers - Hack the Planet! I work in IT and I love how bad this movie can be.

Highlander - Action with a Queen soundtrack and music video shots. Oh, and swords!

Bill and Ted's is great. I saw it in the theater originally with a bunch of friends. I loved it, the rest hated it. I don't know what they expected, but it was spot on for me.

The Final Countdown.
(Hey, if you want to change history, don’t chase the Japanese strike force. Go sink all their carriers. Sheesh.)

The Man Who Would be King. (Sean Connery in the footsteps of Alexander)

Kelly’s Heroes. (Always with the negative waves, Moriarity)

The Man with One Red Shoe.

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

I have thousands of favorites. But since you want unusual I will say...

I love that movie and even saw it in the theatre when it first came out.

For me, it’s Hudson Hawk or Howard the Duck.

I have been trying to find HH on DVD, with commentary. I swear I saw it once at Walmart, had commentary from Willis and Aiello. A week later it was gone. Google never turned it up, so I must’ve imagined it.

For me my most unusual favorite would have to be Southland Tales. It's the most bizarre, hilarious, cinematic drug trip I've ever seen. It's definitely not good cinema, but it's the best B movie ever made.

I should add Time Bandits, Brazil, and Adventures of Baron Munchausen to my list.
