TOPIC: Board/Card Games!

Board/Card Games! 7 years 7 months ago #37

The only games I have rated as 9 on BGG are:
Twilight imperium
Puerto Rico
Power grid
Magic: the gathering
Die macher
Battlestar Galactica
7 wonders

Also, Madeira might make this list if I ever get to play it again.

A friend figured out the theme that runs through all my favorites: they are deep. I enjoy games that you get to make lots of important decisions. Either elegant or complex is fine. And I can enjoy some randomness so long as it doesn't render player decisions irrelevant (or minimal impact).

You can look at all the games I rate as 8 and 7 to see the bulk of games I most enjoy.

If you have two players, I recommend 7 Wonders: Duel. AWESOMESAUCE

Played with my game group this week - Automobiles (great game) and AYA, a new French coop game that uses a falling domino mechanic (it was okay - didn't really get into it, but it was amusing and had nice components).

Just tried alchemists this weekend. A lot of fun and very different from a lot of games.

Traded my original 7 Wonders, it was good but I was kind of done with it. Heard many great things about Duel though. I rarely play 2 player games though. Summoner Wars is my go-to for that.

I'd love to try that some time. Maybe if I can find a game at a convention. Don't really want to buy it, as I don't think it's right for my groups.

Just picked up Terra Mystica last week... need to learn that!

Isle of Skye is my newest game that I've actually played. Cool short Euro tile placement game with some interesting variable scoring. It just won the Kennerspiel des Jahres.

My group is also halfway through Pandemic Legacy now. Still eager to play that every time to see what will happen next!
Classes Played: Barbarian (65 times), Monk (56), Ranger (33), Rogue (25), Cleric (21), Fighter (13), Druid (12), Paladin (11), Dwarf Fighter (10), Bard (7), Elf Wizard (2), Wizard (2)

Isle of Skye is a solid game - enjoyed it.

Played Sushi Go today - nice light filler with a drafting mechanic.

I think Betray at House on the Hill is "okay."

I enjoy 7 Wonders.

Kung Fu

Best Treehouse Ever
Carcassonne

Party/Family
Apples To Apples
Xbox Jackbox Party Pack 1/2
Sushi Dice

Board Games
Zombicide - Season 1 I have fully painted, wanted to get Plague but don't have those types of players around anymore
7 Wonders
Forbidden Island
HeroScape for many years but same as Zombicide
Munchkin Quest

Card Games
I love deckbuilders
Thunderstone
Dominion
Ascension
Strife

Apples to Apples is okay.

Bang! and Dominion are underwhelming.

I dislike Carcassonne.

Did I mention how much I HATE Zombicide? :P

Allen John wrote: Surprisingly, not really. I only played about 10 different games, and left most of them feeling "meh", even the ones I'd played (and loved) before. For example, I love Dominion to death, but the one play of Empires I got in the Rio Grande room was miserable - the cards were very complex, there was virtually no card draw to smooth things out, there was too much to keep track of, the person who sat down and invited me into the game left us halfway through, and it went almost an hour! Longest game of Dominion I ever played (although a lot of that comes down to not removing the extra Provinces when we went from 3 players to 2).

Mystic Vale does seem like it will be a great game once the other half of it comes out later this year, though.

I tried Mystic Vale and was not that impressed.

I guess it's slightly better than Dominion though (and I rate Dominion as pretty low)....

Wade Schwendemann wrote: I absolutely love Agricola and Power Grid.

I dislike Power Grid too. It's even worse than Dominion!!!

Terra Mystica is just okay.

Normal Pandemic is just okay. I have a friend who LOVES Pandemic but I find it gets boring and repetitive. I did enjoy Pandemic Legacy because of the changes and twists.

Not crazy about Carcassonne myself.

Having trouble getting Seafall back on the table. Hard to get the schedules of four adults, two with kids, to come together.

In no particular order, games I play often (Have a group I play with at work once a month)

Sentinels of the Multiverse (Co-op vs the game) (Probably my favorite)
Scythe (mentioned previously)
Shadow Hunters (Like Bang, but better imo. Hidden identity team combat)
One-Night Ultimate Werewolf (10 minute version of Werewolf/Mafia)
Spyfall (Hidden identity question asking game)
Secret Hitler (Very fun hidden traitor party game) (2nd favorite)
Shadows over Camelot (Hidden traitor co-op vs the game)
Betrayal at House on the Hill (Yay expansion soon) (3rd favorite)
My Happy Farm (Silly little turn planning game)
7 Wonders (mentioned previously)
We Didn't Playtest This At All (The definition of random filler game)

Just recently tried Discworld: Ankh-Morpork and had a good time. Helps that I'm a big fan of the books.
It's time to toss the dice!

I love this type of small hidden role/bluffing/lying game, but my groups don't play them too often. I haven't tried any of those but I've heard good things about each of them.

I have:
Bang: The Dice Game + expansion
Resistance: Avalon
Good Cop Bad Cop + expansions
Deception: Murder in Hong Kong
Saboteur
Coup + expansion
Love Letter
One Night Revolution (haven't played yet)

Deception is probably my new favorite in the category. I like that there is some concrete information to go on and also some social information regarding how the players are acting. Meanwhile, discussion of how the murder might've happened is always entertaining.
Classes Played: Barbarian (65 times), Monk (56), Ranger (33), Rogue (25), Cleric (21), Fighter (13), Druid (12), Paladin (11), Dwarf Fighter (10), Bard (7), Elf Wizard (2), Wizard (2)

How can nobody have mentioned Mice and Mystics? My daughter comes over for dinner once a week and we play an episode. Don't know what we'll do when we finish with the Downwood Forest.

I love playing Filch the Scamp.

I've really wanted to play this.
