I really enjoyed this year's GenCon brew from Sun King Brewery, the 20 Sided Rye.

If I sent you some cash via Paypal, would you mind picking me up 2 4-packs, which I can then get from you in November?

Send me a PM if you're able to help a guy out.

Thanks!

Josh I am an Indy local that is headed to GHC. Is it possible to still get the 20 Sided Rye, and if it is would you want 3 month old beer (I know that is not too old but just checking).

They have them in pint cans (which look awesome in their own right). So long as they are kept at room temperature or colder they would be fine. I have bottles and cans in my beer cellar that have aged really well over several months to a year (sometimes more).

Most Sun King beers need to stay chilled, especially any with a lot of hops. They routinely pull their beers from stores when they have less than 30 days left of shelf life. Sadly, those are destroyed :(

There are several factors that determine how well a beer ages. Hoppy beers (without other strong flavors) such as IPAs do not age well at all. Something like Fistful of Hops (Sun King's IPA) you want as fresh as possible, anything over a month old would not be good. As for cellaring beers, you want something over ~7% in order to cellar well.

20 Sided Rye is only 5.5%, so I definitely wouldn't cellar it, but it's not an IPA or anything, so it will still be drinkable after 3 months. It probably won't be as good as it was fresh, but shouldn't be bad yet.

As for actually purchasing some, I'm not sure that it's still available. I haven't looked for it since GenCon, but I know the liquor stores ran out of it before the end of the con, and my understanding is that they wouldn't be shipping out more after the con (though I could be completely wrong). I would imagine it's still possible to find it in cans or on tap at the occasional bar, but not in stores.

I would offer to help you out, but I'm not sure if I'll be going to GHC or not. Also, I'm leaving for a week on a business trip tomorrow, so I won't be able to check until the end of next week (though maybe I can get my sister to take a look for me before then). If I do end up making it to GHC, do you have any interest in a beer trade, Joshua? (Or anyone else for that matter?)

Khedron (and jediBC for that matter),

When I left on Sunday the Sun King Brewing location at 135 North College Avenue had a lot of cans still on hand, and it was really easy to find.

It was $32.10 with tax for 2 4-packs.

Craft beers tend to last for about 6 months at least from my experience, a lot longer for the high AC ones.

If they have any left I can send you $40 for the brews and the difference for your trouble.

If you want to trade beer, I can pick up anything from Cincinnati you're interested in (and from a lot further away too because of Jungle Jim's being about 15 minutes from my house). I highly recommend anything from Mad Tree or Rivertown. Both have phenomenal pumpkin ales that just came out this week.

Thanks,

Joshua

Wow... you actually live pretty close to me. I live in Reading and hit up Jungle Jim's all the time for beer. Definitely agree with Mad Tree and Rivertown.

Wow. I used to live in West Chester. Jungle Jim's is awesome.

This is hilarious because when I scanned the very bottom of this long post all I saw was WEST CHESTER and READING. I live in Denver, PA and West Chester and Reading are both close to me. I actually started to think TD people lived close to me. Darn, darn, darn other States having cities with the same names as those near me.

I didn't even think of actually going to the brewery  I rarely go downtown (with the obvious once-a-year exception), and really only go to the brewery when they have their King's Reserve releases. My sister works right near the brewery, so I'm making her take a look tomorrow, and pick some up if it's still available.

Yeah, it depends heavily on the style (some go bad quickly (e.g. IPAs) and some get better over several years (e.g. RISs)), but I definitely wouldn't be worried about 3 month old 20 Sided Rye.

Yeah, MadTree and Rivertown are both very good breweries. I've had a few MadTree beers (though I actually wasn't a big fan of The Great PumpCan). I've also had quite a few Rivertown beers, but mostly their sours.

(Off-topic, but Sun King related, I will be downtown on Sep. 10 for Canvitational. It's a canned beer festival, and is pretty cool because, since it's only breweries that can their beer, it does a really good job of pulling breweries from farther away than a normal festival. (I know MadTree has been there in the past, not that they're far away, but related to your post.))

Isn't that ironic as IPAs were invented in the first place for their longevity? *lol*

Them's fightin' words.

(Full disclosure, I am to pumpkin beers like basic college girls are to pumpkin spice lattes.)

The absolute best in my opinion is Southern Tier's Warlock, which lies somewhere between their Pumpking (great in it's own right) and their Choklat Imperial Stout. It's like dark chocolate pumpkin pie.

That actually sounds really awesome - how about this instead: IF Sun King does still have cans at the brewery and you're able to pick up a couple of packs for me, I meet up with you at Canvitational; and I can pick up whatever you're interested in from down here and bring it with me. We can talk beer and TD. :)

Sidenote: Rivertown is building a new primary brewery about 10 minutes from my house. I already live next door (literally, I could throw rocks at it) the Miller-Coors brewery. We're on top of the largest aquifer in Ohio. I predict Rivertown is going to end up with a stool in their taproom with my name on it by the time everything is said and done. ;)

I was thinking the same thing (Malvern, PA native here, with family still out in Reading).

If you're planning to come up for Canvitational, I can definitely meet up with you then. Here's a discount code I got in an email:

(Use Promo Code: CANVBUDDY and take off an additional $5 towards a General Admission (now $40 until August 13th, $60 day of the event) or use CANVHEY for $5 off Early Entry ($75). The promo code is good for online ONLY. 100% of the event proceeds benefit various amazing not-for-profit organizations from Central Indiana.)
