Just found these two tidbits.

The weapon (Kylo's) is powered by a cracked kyber crystal, requiring the side vents on the hilt, and resulting in its unrefined operation, according to the Visual Dictionary.

In the novel, when Rey uses the Force to pull the saber to her, Ren has a moment of recognition, uttering, “It is you”

+1

Also, my wife mentioned the New Hope similarities as we discussed it driving home from seeing it. My comment was simply: "... Or the Empire just likes big flashy weapons of mass destruction and lack originality."

Well this one was effective at taking out the New Republic. If it had 5 more seconds it would have taken out the resistance too. I mean come on who thinks that some brash pilot is going to fly through the shield at greater than lightspeed. He has to be the cockiest SOB ever or the luckiest. :)

Pfft. That's on the First Order. As soon as they heard Millenium Falcon and Han Solo they should have been preparing for Hell On Earth. And, let's not forget the slimmest possibility of Luke being located and convinced to join the Resistance. Annnnd... unless the First Order knew for a fact Wedge Antilles was dead they should have assumed he'd show up, too. I mean he was only there for both Death Star destructions. LOL!!

Talk about failing to learn from the past. Kids today. Always taking the easy way.

Or it could be powered by a Barab Ingot, which it on the verge of losing its cohesion.

In the novels of long ago (well not too long ago). Leia and Han had two kids.

Jacen: loved all living things. He keeps pets of all species: animals, plants, insects and he can speak to them using the force.

Jaina: takes after her father, Han. She is a mechanical whiz, always dismantling droids, machines, anything she can get her hands on. Like Han, her spirit and self-confidence sometimes get her into trouble.

Nothing is canon anymore. Disney know do what they want...

Does Luke have a kid?
Do Leia and Han have twins still?
Might the lightsaber have called out to Rey because she is worthy?

There is the other idea that the useless brat Kylo Ren is actually infiltrating the dark side to get the Sith Master to come out of hiding. But this seems far less likely...

There is canon stuff. The new books are the new canon. In them Kylo has a cracked crystal.

The intensity of the movie slowed down, when Kylo pulled off his mask... He should have left it on...

I agree. I watched it this weekend. I had a hard time buying into the bad guy as a person to be feared. I think it ranks about #5 out the seven movies.

Actually I liked it and have it as number 4. (although any star wars movie without Jar Jar is automatically better than the first 3) My take on Kylo is he is not the villain (big surprise as we have a giant unseen "master" wandering around) but that the First Order's ideals are the Villian

To me, Kylo Ren/Ben is just a child who is prone to tantrums. Which is totally evidenced throughout the movie.

Leia commented to Han that she sent him to Luke to learn. The assumption is that it was at a young age when his Force powers were starting.

I can only imagine that this kid didn't have a doting Mother and Father. Leia would be busy establishing the Senate and other political matters while Han would be doing Han-stuff. I'd be willing to bet C3-P0 was the primary caretaker. I do know in the Zahn novels (not canon now) the twins were cared for by Winter.

So, with that in mind, like most children who don't have their parents around a lot to show affection he was probably craving it. And, a way of showing how much he wanted attention from his Mom and Dad he would throw tantrums. Force tantrums can be pretty nasty. Keep in mind, I am only theorizing here!

Leia and Han were probably at wits end and just took the easy path and sent him away because he was strong in the Force. Not the best parenting technique, but it is a movie after all. Although, it happens in the real world, too... just without the Force being involved.

My understanding is we will see Kylo grow into a true villain like Luke became a true hero and Rey will do. It is not just the Hero's journey this time but aslo the villain's. We shall see though.

TFA is in my top 3. I hate f-ing ewoks more than I hate Jar Jar.
