TOPIC: Music to code by . . .

OK... don't laugh at this one...
A couple of the songs from the BEACHES (yes, the Bette Midler movie) soundtrack tend to make it onto my lists quite often: 'Otto Titsling' and 'Oh Industry'. They help lighten up my normal dose of Nine Inch Nails, Tool, System of a Down, etc.
Yes, the first one you mentioned is quite funny, and have always liked the sound of the second.
We all need a little whimsy in our playlists which is why my playlist starts with camel walk by southern culture on the skids. A song about snack crackers. :p

The faster and more ridiculously loud the better... Dirty Rotten Imbeciles (DRI) and Mindless Self Indulgence are the beginning and the end for me. If I need to get motivated, I just throw on some of that.

Thanks for the suggestions. *smiles*

I usually pretty good at motivating myself, but when my adrenal fatigue acts up sometimes its hard to keep going, and I find music can be really helpful in keeping me going.
I really appreciate everyone's suggestions and please keep posting its always nice to hear something different. :)

I'm all for techno music when sitting at my pc but allow me to throw out one person who I honestly think should be mentioned and included into a play list for almost every occassion.

Johhny Cash

The man is a legend and when you look at his music you can see his touch played out in virtually every genre including gansta rap. Think about it!

Indeed.
My playlists usually have several different genres in them as I don't like to feel like I've been listening to the same thing all day. Plus I find I need different types of music for different stages.
My sewing playlist a few hours into it has flamenco guitar(ottmar liebert), and peruvian folk(viento de los andes). Its very calming to keep my frustration levels down. Because usually if I'm running into any walls its about then.
So variety is always good.

El Humahuaqueno by Viento de los andes is nice but still peppy in its own way.
Sadly walmart has a poor excuse for a world, new age, or folk.
There idea of world is reggae and a celtic tenor cd.
So needless to say my last trip to wally world yeilded no music that I was looking for.
Hey Douglas where do you get your ray lynch? Should I like check a wherehouse music store?

Speaking of playlists, calming affects, genres and the like... allow me a moment to pontificate in a geekly manner for I may turn to all of you who have contributed to the forum post in the not-too-distant future. As some of you may or may not know, I am working to complete my Master's thesis in Human-computer Interaction (hopefully by the time we all gather). It just so happens my thesis topic deals with this very subject.

I am comparing software-driven playlist generation to the emotional response listeners have to these playlists. In a nutshell, using music samplings from the software’s mathematically grouped clusters, the study will test whether these music clusters elicit a statistically similar sense of mood response among human participants.

If the answer is they do, then this opens the door a little more to further discussion of in the area of using "emotion" as a component to software interfaces. Don't you find it odd that most music player software don't let you sort beyond typical categories? Music is an expression of music, so why not let me choose it accordingly? Better yet, let me tell it what mood I'm in... and what I want to be in... and let it automatically create the proper playlist to take me there. (A few sites and software try, but typically they are based on human created lists and comparisons.)

Anyhow, don't be surprised if I ask you all to take a little online survey some day in the coming months!

Thanks, I greatly appreciate the offer! I've really been impressed by the wide variety of music you and others have discussed. I'll readily admit I'm no music afficianado. But the topic of emotions and interfaces greatly intrigue me. So the discussions on how we "classify" and group music according to mood, etc. falls right in line.

The questions will range from broad questions on how you currently group music, to terms you use, when and why you play certain types of music, etc. All in time however, I'm still in early stages. It's been a slow process I've found easy to set aside to do other things... like write forum postings! =D

My current iTunes library says I have 63 genres,314 artists . I SOOO need new music! *little laugh* Me thinks I need to see if my eldest bro has any new cds I can borrow. :)

But please feel free to send it when ever you get to it. Yes, forum posting can be awfully distracting, can't it? *tries to focus on pinning cloak hem*

Indy,

WTG on your reserch. I agree with your thought that WE should say what our mood is and what music we would play to rid or enhance it. This may not give you any information, but if you are looking for validation in your reserch, try looking at The Journal of Music Therapy or Music Therapy Perspectives. There are reserch articules there on the effects of music and mood, along with other subjects that have alot to do with the use of music as therapy. An additional resource is www . amta . com (no spaces). I beleive in recent years they have studied the computer and other sources of music use.

Good Luck!
I think it's cool that you are doing your thesis on this topic. I know when I used to work at my university during the summer painting that I would start out my morning by playing something soft and slow to help me ease into the day. As the day wore on, I would pick up the tempo on my musical choices. To me, music is all about flow.
