While it says that in the first post of this thread, there appears to be further clarification on the first page on the linked pdf (same post)

MEC_Relic_Legendary.pdf wrote: Note: Because the original MEC damage effect will remain in play, Wizard cards will not be getting redesigned until all class cards are updated. This should be in the next year or so.

(emphasis mine)

It says the cards will be redesigned AND says when the cards are redesigned, damage will not be doubled. What is unclear about that?

I see no mention of doubling or not doubling unless you are referring to this line:

Jeff Martin wrote: We will not be changing the Wizard cards because the old power remains in effect.

which also conflicts with the above statement from Jeff in the pdf shrugs.

Also doubling (or at least increasing by a fair bit) spell damage would also make the MEC as designed more viable. So that at least we're getting a sizable damage increase for the massive damage we're taking, its kinda the inverse method of Laz's recommendation, with probably better (lack of) scaling for future balance since we wont have to worry about +spell damage creep meshing with MEC's expected output numbers.

Why can't MEC be:

  • Pay 10 hp to double base damage
  • Pay 30 hp to double all damage including bonuses

So, can I use Boost on a spell and then my standard action to cast a second spell? Since I'm not actually casting the spell, but only using Boost, isn't this a free action and not a standard action?

Here's how I think of it: Boost replaces the effect of one of your cast spells with a new effect, which is add the base damage and skill check bonus to a physical attack slide of another player. Boost does not create or cast the spell (like all mage powers), so you need a spell to transform with Boost. Like all mage powers (except Absorb), it requires a FA to activate.

So you cast a spell (however you do that), and then you boost it with a FA Mage power, replacing its effect with the boost.

You could Quicken+Boost to as a FA, and have the spell whose effect amounts to a boost be cast as an instantaneous action.

Looking at it another way - clearly Alter doesn't cast the spell that is being altered - it modifies a spell you have already cast via some other means. I think Boost is the same.

I disagree completely. Boost appears to sacrifice a spell instead of casting it as a channel of power to another player. It makes no sense that this would take up the Free Action and the Standard Action of the Wizard. They are already giving up a sizable amount of damage losing all spelldamage bonuses to apply boost. It seems extremely harsh to ALSO expect them to lose their standard action.

Do you see a wording difference with Alter that makes you think these two effects are mechanically different?

"...once per round an Ashenne's Arch-Mage Medallion allows a wizard to modify a spell (not a scroll, special power/ability, or magic item) with one or more of the Arch-Mach Power effects listed below...""

You need a spell to modify with Boost to begin with. That spell has to be generated by something that's not a FA (because you need your FA for boost itself)

The long explanation in the Example section of Boost arguing for why it's good, does not mention that you can boost using a FA only, which would seem to be a big selling point if true.

I'd be delighted to learn otherwise.

I was wrong about this, Boost has been explained in detail - you can boost with a Free Action and have a standard action left over to cast a spell.

You can't conserve/sharpen/alter a boosted spell.

A Boosted usage has no effect other than adding the base damage (+ skill checks *2 with MeC optionally) (e.g. it does not also cast a spell affecting a monster separately)

Boost does require crossing off the spell used in boost.

Watching the Fighter Legendary get improved via errata, and thinking about any of the various:

Quicken 2/room
Additional use of any mage power if you forego MeC for room 1/room
MeC doubles base + Bonus

I still want 1 Mage Power that doesn’t “sacrifice” HP and 1 Arch-Mage Power that doesn’t either. They can scrifice a spell box instead of any HP. Or reduce AC, Saves, or To Hit bonuses in coaching room.
I play Wizard.

Could be as good as no MEC usage, gain 30 hp. That’s like 6 mage powers!

You have three options regarding what you can do with your 2014 Mad Evoker's Charm token:
  1. Starting early Spring, 2021, if you have the 2014 MEC and wish to continue using its ability, you need to exchange your 2014 version for the 2021 version.
  2. If you would prefer to replace your 2014 MEC with a completely different Ultra Rare token, you may turn in your 2014 MEC for any UR from the main set of 2020 or 2021 tokens.
  3. If you use your 2014 MEC to make a Mage Medallion, some of the other ingredient costs are slightly reduced.
If you choose to exchange your 2014 MEC for a 2021 MEC or a 20/21 UR, you’ll receive a 10× Treasure Chips token. The 2014 version of MEC will no longer be equippable after December 1st, 2021. You must exchange your 2014 version for the 2021 version before 12/1/2021.
If you choose to use your 2014 MEC in the reduced-cost recipe for Mage Medallion, that is in lieu of receiving a 10× Treasure Chips token as part of the exchange.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

Just out of curiosity will the 2014 mec still be usable for transmutes after 2021?

For what its worth, this appears to be about a 2-month shorter window than we had for the Lenses of Divine Sight swap. With the lack of in-person events to help get the word out, I'd suggest a longer window rather than a shorter window,

It would make wonderful sense to allow the 2014 MEC to be exchanged for a 20/21 UR/21 MEC until the Mage Medallion recipe expires in 2022. Then there is a clean single break in when it is accepted.
