TOPIC: GENCON Housing Access Times

GENCON Housing Access Times 5 years 2 months ago #1

Good luck to everyone on getting a good Hotel Room this year!

My access time is 6:13 PM, so no chance of a connected hotel for me. Hopefully my friends will have better luck. :)

12:08 here. This is the first time in 3 years we'll be able to secure block housing downtown.

Odds are, this means we'll get shut out of being able to secure full TD runs, but for now I'm celebrating :D

That’s almost as good as a VIG,

After the past few years, I had to triple-check my email to make sure I wasn't misreading anything. Managed to score 12:03pm ET this year. Glad this year I can help our group. We need 5 rooms and I think our second best time is 2:01pm ET.

Wow, 5 rooms is a lot! is the goup like 20-30 people?

Pretty sure you can only reserve 1 room per time slot, but I've never tried to reserve more, so can't say for certain

Can you have more than 2 people per room? I thought I read somewhere on the GenCon website it's 1-2 people per room.

It depends on how many badges you bought under your account. If you bought at least 3 badges, that unlocks your ability to reserve a 2nd room.

You're right. I just reread it. Guess I skimmed through it the first time.

The "official" capacity for every room in the block is 4 (and I've stayed in almost every hotel downtown indy for one gen con out another). Some hotels do charge an extra $10 for each person beyond two.

Unofficially, room capacity is about 8, before you just can't cram more people in the room. From roughly 1996 to 2010 I had 8 people in my room. After 2010 my group decided to not have more than 6 in a room, and last year we even dropped to 4.

The 1 room per 2 people thing is just to manage the reservation process on housing selection day. The hotels all have a max occupancy defined for each room (usually like 3 in a king room, 4 in a double/queen room, 6 in a suite). I don't think those limits tend to actually be enforced though.

A lot of places will limit the number of keys they give you, or the number that work. As in, if you give away all 4 initial keys, then the person with their name on the room goes to get a new one, one or more of the old keys will stop working.

Ultimately you can fit 6 to 8 in a room, but logistics get to be quite a pain after 4 imo.
