This is such a win/win for people who want to consume all the TD content:

Before: 4 dungeons with 18 unique rooms.
Now: 3 dungeons with 21 unique rooms
Result: +3 more rooms available.

Before: It took 8 hours to see all 18 rooms.
Now: It takes 6 hours to see all 21 rooms.
Result: 2 more hours of free time at Gen Con

Before: It cost $248 to see all 18 rooms: $13.78 per room.
Now: It costs $234 to see all 21 rooms: $11.14 per room.
Result: Lower absolute cost and lower per room cost to see all the rooms.

On top of all that the floor space should increase a bit for each dungeon.

My TD group is going to dissolve at that price. :(

I honestly don't know what I'm going to do this year. It was a tough sell in the mid-$50's for 2 events, so $78 for 3 is ... not good.

I... am quite upset.

I hope you can work it out. Do you have an opportunity to attend any of the other TD events where the cost for runs is much lower?

I know for me I will often times subsidize ticket prices of people who go on runs with me in exchange for treasure draws. If you are a big token collector and have the funds that could be an option.

I live in Indianapolis, so this is the convention with no travel or hotel costs. :woohoo:

I'm just disappointed, because my expectations have gone from fully buying out two TD runs, to maybe running 1 or 2 events with 1 or 2 other friends.

I'm not enough into tokens that the treasure draws would be an incentive. I'm just a player who's done every adventure for the last 8 or 9 years, and is sad that my streak will end.

Doug,
I love volunteering so I would recommend that to you. You mentioned you have a group of friends that you run with but volunteering is a great way to make new TD friends. Columbus isn't that far away so you could drive. Then your Hotel and Badge are covered, There are Volunteer runs set aside so you're not competing with the entire game playing world to get tickets, The tickets you do buy will be cheaper, You get a stipend, and you get some cool swag.
This might not be your perfect solution but maybe give it some thought.
The rest of us volunteers would welcome you.
Have a Great Weekend.
Bob

Great news. Don't have to worry bout doing four runs and deciding if I want to do puzzle or combat runs.

The First quest thing should be fun to try. It says 500 xp if your below 4th level.

You mention only getting xp once. Does that mean the level of difficulty affects how much Xp you get and will you be able to do the first quest thing multiple times and get xp for it or only once?

Well, since I can play the Journey to the Bliss module at GenCon, that means I don’t have to squeeze Origins into my budget.

Hopefully I can find a party running through all 3 events that needs a Paladin to aid their quest!

Now I need to pick up a few more hours at my part time job to pay for my TD runs...or sell some stuff on the ol’ eBay.
Tenth level achieved! Now for the long journey to 11th level!

+1

This analysis is really great. My first reaction to the price was a bit shocked. This breakdown shows that you're getting more bang for your buck if you run all 3 runs exactly once, though.

I hope I can do all three at Gen Con, but it'll be nice to have Origins offer a shot at Astral Journey.

Will Origins and GHC have lower quality puzzle and/or combat rooms?

The non-Gen Con versions won't have the same level of set dressing and tweaked light and sound levels. For instance, we would have time at Gen Con to set up 80 pines trees, but at the other Cons only 40 pine trees.

Yeah, this was a very tough call to make, but after 15 years we decided we want to really up the quality of the event. The ticket price last year was $62 and it would have been $66 this year if we kept the same structure. We walked away from $10,000s in more revenue to make a better and more immersive event. I hope you will give it a try, or consider volunteering as a way to help with the cost. A part-time DM can earn $150 + $110 badge + good swag that will more than play for a ticket for each of the three adventures!

Click below on how XP stacking works:

For the new True Dungeon: First Quest you get the 500 XP only once during the adventuring season, but if we bring it back in 2019 you can get the 500 XP again.

I like your analysis, but to play devil's advocate...

For people who only care about getting max XP, it was $62 x 2 = $124 last year vs $78 x 3 = $234 this. 89% increase. (Of course you are getting 50% more XP too.)

Overall I like the change but I can understand why some might opt out.

Sure - another way to look at it was last year you got four Dungeon runs for $248 and this year only three for $234. I am hoping that most of my group still wants to play with the ticket price. I'd still like to try all three Dungeons, if enough of my group still wants to.

I do understand what Jeff is doing though, it's admirable that he wants to put the best quality product possible out there, I'm sure that's part of why this has been so successful. We did think last year the way the transitions between rooms was a storyscape instead of a curtained hallway was wonderful, I can't wait to see what's in store for this year.

I hope we don't continue to see price increases well above inflation every year, at some point I'm sure my whole group will move away from True Dungeon if that's the case.
