PUGs = Pick Up Groups (so unplanned groupings)

If a Pick Up Group are all outfitted with Staffs, does that make them Pick Up Sticks? ;)

If it’s an all elf, all staff group are they Pixie Sticks?

Just a hunch, but I feel like may see a lot less pugs this year.

We are going to see a lot less runs period with only one dungeon. As a percentage, I don’t know. You could be right. I don’t plan on being in any organized runs (that may change) but thinking of doing 1 or 2 pug runs after I hear feedback from patrons.

I certainly plan to do one, maybe two depending on pricing. But I am not part of an organized group, tho I have joined many of the “looking got more” groups and met so many great people. So hopefully my Paladin can join a group and smite evil this year!

I would agree. I would love to be able to buy out one or two runs, and fill from the forums.

I could 3ven see myself doing 3 of each, like I did last year.
Which would then mean 3 total, as there is just the one run.

If I play, I'll probably try to get together with a forum group on one run. I'll be surprised if more than a few of my regular TD group is interested in TD online.

I'm sure there will be a Team Synergy run or runs.

Couple of reactions...
1. Video of 10 people plus DM etc is too much real estate for most to deal with.
2. Focus on the task at hand is key. Powerpoint and Google app tools are typical in these digital sessions in work world...watching people while watching presentation is a problem with resolution. You cannot get enough resolution to see the key interest
3. Talk over is going to be a real issue. Specifically, any more than 1 at a time simply doesn’t work in digital. This is somewhat overcome with the “chat” feature as you can pose questions etc to group if everyone is paying attention. In puzzle rooms, the need to work as one will be critical as tech will force that...in real life, splitting up to examine walls, look at trinkets, read the puzzle, do the bard thing, do the rogue thing...very tough and certainly not feasible as we think about it in 12 min slices.
4. Cameras and microphones are a major issue and echo is a very common occurrence in the meetings I have (about 5 a day every day)...so overcoming this requires judicious use of the mute button. Fairly counter to time-based problem solving of a team
5. The “slide” on camera is the only real way to get slide other than the honor system and then we get into the “gaming” of it all a la imitation game
6. I do see how story could be part of the game that makes the technical work...specifically, a muted curse in the dungeon that overcomes the technical hurdles as part of the game setup. Another element is “possession”...where as the DM does the “slides” for us.

Anyway. I am good with video or audio however, video will cause lag on some people’s slower connections and will be totally impractical for cellphone users

Jamie raises good points above.

My thoughts would be that it would be a good idea to have optional video in the coaching room (so anyone who would like to see their party's faces can do so, but it's not mandatory) and switch to audio only in the dungeon.

My reasoning is that audio is much less prone to quality issues than audio+video due to using less bandwidth, and also that players are much less likely to be looking at each others' video feeds anyway once the run has started and there is a dungeon on the screen to examine. It's also likely that quite a lot of people will be joining with a single monitor and not a dual screen setup, so they would either need to have the call hidden in a separate window to the video feed from the dungeon or would lose a lot of screen space to the video feeds from the other party members. This would depend on whether the golem will be joining the session as a regular zoom caller or will be on a separate dedicated video feed (I'm guessing the former), but in both cases it seems better to just have a single screen with the video from the golem.
I play Rogue. Occasionally I even play Rogue well.

I've had zoom meeting with 10+ people with all on screen with no problems. For this purpose just pin the room view so the participant windows don't interfere. You can switch views as needed. If you are planning to use a tablet or phone as your primary device, yes too many windows will quickly become minute windows.

I think there are legitimate concerns about how puzzles will work, but don't assume that puzzle design won't be very different from in person dungeons. In fact, they will have to be different.

Its fair to say that not everyone may have sufficient tech at their disposal.

The Patron runs will surface problems that need to be addressed.

Has any consideration been given for making the parties smaller?

At times, 10 can seem like too much for IRL adventures. I've been in groups of 11 on two separate occasions and the feeling was exacerbated.

Perhaps parties of 8 could make things much more manageable for the online experience. I hope this is something that will be on management's radar during the Patron runs.

There are so many people that I love to run with that I'm certain I'll be doing more than 1 run. As for PUGs, I don't plan to do any complete random PUGs this year. Although, I have some friends I'll want to run with where there won't be 10 of us, so that run may be a partial PUG.

As for the technology, it sounds like what is being planned is flexible enough to accommodate a lot of different setups. I know in my case, my phone is outdated and my phone plan will not let me stream a lot of video. It's been on my radar to upgrade, but I don't see it happening in the next month. On the other hand, my laptop was purchased to accommodate video conferencing for work, so I'm certain it will work with Zoom. It also plugs into a docking station with a second larger monitor, so I really am not concerned no matter which way we go. It's going to be a learning experience for a lot of us, but it sure beats the alternative of no TD for a year.
