By the time the absent player showed up, the coach was already getting the party card filled out, so there wasn't really a lot of time for discussion. I do appreciate the advice, though.

Yikes. Well, i can see two major variations here. If the guy hadnt even checked in, then for all you know, he isnt showing up. You should ask for the class. Of course the friend will insist he is on the way, but not only is that not a guarantee, but it isnt fair to you. And the coach should not fill out that persons stats if they havent checked in.

If they did check in early because they had another event or otherwise knew they would be running late, then the friend sent ahead should have the authority to discuss giving up the class. If that person cant make that decision on behalf of their friend, they shouldnt be allowed to claim the class at all.

But of course, this is all my sense of justice and fairness speaking out, if i was there in your situation i would probably stay quiet and pick a different class...which is, of course, infuriating to think that some group could be using this social tendency to get their preferred classes by intentionally showing up at the last minute.

At the end of the day, we're all here to have fun. If someone's holding a class card for the class you want to play, just ask them: Hey, would it be ok if I played XYZ? See what their response is. Most folks aren't going to get upset if you ask nicely. Sounds like that's what you did, which is good. I think you did the right thing.

I do recommend bringing a backup class though. Sometimes the class you want to play just isn't available.

Picking a different class is what I ended up doing. Luckily, I had a build to support it based on some good advice on these forums about overlap and some cheap additions for class-specific gear. I made the offer to loan some of the stuff I wasn't using to the player with my primary to make sure he knew there were no hard feelings.

Also, the coach hadn't filled out that player's stats, but was working down the line and I had to get tokens on the mat or risk delaying the game.

Thank you for the thoughts behind not wanting a more formal policy. It's well reasoned, even in rant form: A policy won't stop a jerk from being a jerk.

+1 to infinity and beyond on this post.
The 34 pages of going in circles when it's going to change nothing has been amusing and eye rolling at the same time.

As I posted in the “other” thread

D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

Was this post meant for the TD Forum or for our politicians in DC?

I had one run where a person went in and grabbed the cards before they were checked in, because the person with the runs on their badge was elderly and moving slow. It was just a bit obnoxious to look and see that all 10 wrist bands were on the table when I checked in and then walk in and see 4 of the cards (two of which were the preferred class of the people I was with) already claimed by someone who hadn't checked in.

We adjusted and scrapped together other classes, but it just felt...off.
