I think what should be is that people should act like bloody grown-ups and resolve their differences through peaceful discussion rather than being obnoxious little children in the sandbox. Sometimes we don't get our way. Sometimes other people are assholes. Creating a string of infinitesimally detailed policies ain't gonna change that fact. Deal with it.

To me, this is separate from the level 3 discussion.

Before I was active on the forums, it was my groups plan to arrive to coaching as early as possible in an effort to secure our preferred classes. If someone or someones were late, I would personally grab the paladin, monk, ranger, barbarian, dwarf fighter and cleric and hold them all, until my friends showed up.

This never resulted in a roll off (I was level 3). I have no idea if it resulted in hurt feelings. In 10+ years I never had anyone ask for any of the class cards I was holding for anyone else. I do recall them waiting until my friend arrived and asking about playing the class, but don't recall who did or didn't play it.

This was when I was playing each dungeon once per year at GC only.

If we enact a policy, I would submit that it should not allow this.

I don't know if we need to enact one or not.

I apologize if I cause any strife for anyone during any of the times I did this.

At the end of the day, we're all here to have fun. If someone's holding a class card for the class you want to play, just ask them: Hey, would it be ok if I played XYZ? See what their response is. Most folks aren't going to get upset if you ask nicely. Sounds like that's what you did, which is good. I think you did the right thing.

I do recommend bringing a backup class though. Sometimes the class you want to play just isn't available.

It seems like this situation happens more frequently than invoking the 3rd level benefit, which has received quite a bit of back and forth. I was fairly sure that reservations weren't official policy, but didn't want to add to the noise in the other thread.

In the instance I had this year at Gen Con, I did make my preference known, but I couldn't really have a discussion because the person who wanted the class wasn't there and didn't show up until significantly later. The friend who reserved the cards wasn't really in a position to discuss on the absent player's behalf.

By the time the absent player showed up, the coach was already getting the party card filled out, so there wasn't really a lot of time for discussion. I do appreciate the advice, though.

Yikes. Well, i can see two major variations here. If the guy hadnt even checked in, then for all you know, he isnt showing up. You should ask for the class. Of course the friend will insist he is on the way, but not only is that not a guarantee, but it isnt fair to you. And the coach should not fill out that persons stats if they havent checked in.

If they did check in early because they had another event or otherwise knew they would be running late, then the friend sent ahead should have the authority to discuss giving up the class. If that person cant make that decision on behalf of their friend, they shouldnt be allowed to claim the class at all.

But of course, this is all my sense of justice and fairness speaking out, if i was there in your situation i would probably stay quiet and pick a different class...which is, of course, infuriating to think that some group could be using this social tendency to get their preferred classes by intentionally showing up at the last minute.

I agree with Kurt's thoughts on this. I'll add that I have been that guy, who shows up and has his card reserved for him... BUT ONLY, AND I MEAN ONLY when I am part of a run that my group controls all 10 tix, and classes are pre-agreed upon (usually because I've booked back-to-back runs). On a run where your group is a mix (PUG to any degree) holding a card for someone is just not cool. The best option... plan ahead and don't be that person.
