Re: this thought and some of the earlier discussion around the appropriateness of "calling dibs" on specific classes...isn't the official rule around class selection conflicts for players to have a roll off (assuming they are L3 EXP or higher)? This is not a rhetorical question - I see that listed on the website but am unaware if there is a more formal discussion on how to resolve these kinds of conflicts.

But if that is in fact the official rule on how to handle conflicts, or even if not but there is some sort of official rule out there, it's unclear to me why there's such angst around the pre-planning. Everyone's really excited about True Horde and some choose to channel that excitement into trying to map out the builds as much as possible. Everyone can list their preferences, and if we get to a point where we are only allowed X of any given class, and the group has > X demand for that class, we'll just resolve it with the roll-off (or by whatever formal rule TD has established) and on we go.

I know this hornets nest died down a bit...and I guess I was feeling bored...

That is the official rule.

Here is my unofficial "rule" (more like a guideline, really)

Work it out like adults.

Unofficial "rule" #2

Planning is good. Most forumites prefer preplanned groups because it gives the best chance to ensure that everyone has maximum opportunity to play a class they are comfortable with and equipped for.

Unofficial "rule" #3

The good of the party > getting what you want

D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend - Faramir

Have a friend that got into the Saturday horde as well.

Rogue - Druid - Ranger - Cleric for preference order.

Gear wise mostly red, a couple purples. Guessing rogue might not be a great class selection for this event, have to wait to get more details about how similar to grind it will be.

Updated through Lady B. Though I may have not understood what Aegoce meant. So please review and let me know if I have something wrong.

Actually, I think we do. From Jeff's description of Horde: "Three parties of 10 players will combine ..."

Since no party can have more than one of any class, there can be no more than three of each in the thirty-player mega party.

Otherwise, Jeff would have just said, "30 players..." Or, he would have said "no more than X of each."

I think that also answers Mr Steele's question. Tokens, songs, and spells that affect "the party" only affect the ten players in that party, not all 30 players. Maybe single-target spells and effects can be cast interparty, but that's unclear.

That's how I'd interpret Jeff's description of the event. But I could be wrong.

Brad you cut out an important part though. "Three parties of 10 players will combine into one party From the description it is one party. I agree we don't know how it will work but I am not certain the description helps much. We shall see mid March.

Jeff hasn't told me one way or the other, but I suspect Brad Mortensen is right. To his cogent argument, I'll add that it's highly probably that True Horde will use three party cards to run combat. Since those are all pre-formatted for 12 (2 unused per group) unique classes, I highly doubt there will be more than three of any one class. But like jedibcg said, we shall see.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?
Please post TDb corrections in this thread .

Part of my interpretation is based on what he DIDN'T say. It would have been simpler to say "A thirty-person party...," or some other simple phrase, if that's how he wanted it to work. But he said it starts as three parties, so unless one of the parties has two Paladins, which isn't possible under current rules, you can't end up with more than one per party, or three total. Maybe it was just for flavor, or a nod to tradition. But if I were betting, that's how I'd go.

But I work in IT and sometimes think like a computer. And I'm not judging how I think it should work, just trying to read Jeff's intentions based on what he said and how he did and didn't say it.

And Druegar has a good point about the party cards.

I'm also thinking back to Smoak, where two parties fought her simultaneously, but independently, or the lava room last year when we broke the party into three mini-parties which had limited effect on each other.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I do think you are both correct about character class limitations. That something only affects 10 instead of 30 is what I am not yet convinced of. As you said looking at what he said. I think it would have been easier to say 3 parties fight together against the Jeffagorgon. The fact that he said combines into one makes me think that characters from what was party A can interactive with party B. In the Smoak scenario we were not attacking Smoak together. Damage from one party did not affect the HP the other party's Smoak. In fact I believe the DM's told us the other party was an illusion. I think, I could be remembering wrong. Again we shall see. I have no preferences so whatever Jeff comes up with I think will be fun.

Yeah, now you mention it, I remember the illusion-thing, too.

I hope the parties CAN interact to some extent this time, though I think a trio of Bards granting +6/+12 would be hard to track for the DM(s) as they swap instruments or get knocked out. But then, chaos will be part of the fun.

I would guess only 1 bardsong at a time no stacking.

Jeff also mention that there will be minions to the Jeffagorgon so maybe groups will be off fighting them and will need a bardsong where every that is. We shall see.
