I would highly recommend having an official government-issued identification card on your person at all times when in the US. I'm quite serious.

ETA: Especially in Indiana and three other states !
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

For those of us who are also volunteering, where do we meet up?
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Let them trap us. We have our swords. - Elric of Melnibone.

You try to get them to play the game, but all they want to do is play the rules. - Ardak Kumerian

If one is a GT participant and a volunteer, please let the volunteer coordinator know you're going on the GT run now! Don't wait until Wednesday night to spring that info. Do not assume the volunteer coordinators read this thread.

From the link:
Indiana requires either name, address, and date of birth, or driver's license, if on the person's possession, and only applies if the person was stopped for an infraction or ordinance violation.
this is not a signature.

I don't understand why people think this is such a big deal... I only carry ID on me if I am driving or going to use a credit card/check... even foreign, especially since US passports in Latin America sell on black market, even the new "chipped" passports, for between $500 and $1000. The hotels of Buenos Aires even provide a lock box service and can arrange for passport presentation if needed...

The only state I know of here that REQUIRES written identification is Colorado, and only if you have been accused of a crime.

Some foreign countries require a facsimile of your passport, but few require actual original since that would make every tourist and business traveler a mark...

I'm aware the law only requires an ID if you're accused of a crime. And while I'm certain Brad isn't in the habit of going around breaking the law, the key word is "accused" not "convicted". Give our current "climate", it's my personal opinion that erring on the side of caution would be prudent.

Not totally correct... sorry...

You are not required to provide written official ID, only required to give verbal, if accused. (Except Colorado)

But if accused, the law requires you to give your name and some other stats in those four states, only Colorado requires written. Even Indiana says clearly you only have to provide written ID if available, otherwise only your name and birthdate. The reason is most states you can refuse to answer and not be charged with new allegations. Those four states require you answer or more charges can be brought up... so even if accused, you only are required to give VERBAL information on name, et. al.

Of course, if you do offer Verbal ID in any state, it must be truthful... but you can refuse to give this information in most states.

ID can get stolen, and then you have difficult time traveling back home. I have experienced this myself, and luckily a written police report got me through security at the time, but with things changing as you stated, that might not work today.

Eh. if carrying an ID means I have a 30 second conversation with a cop, and not an 8 hour argument with a cop .. I'll just carry the ID. There are a lot of things you are not *required* to do that make your life a hell of a lot simpler :)

I don't remember needing to produce an ID last year, but I always carry one anyway (unless I am running, which I guess is a mistake!). I do remember that my name was on a volunteer list.

You make a good point... if where the police can be trusted... but some Latin American countries this is not the case...

Plus, you may be required to show ID for non-criminal reasons as well... buying alcohol, tobacco, picking up badges for conferences, etc...

I emailed Lori who told me to inform the Coach coodinators. I'm pretty confident that one of them is reading this thread. ;)

I'll mention it Wednesday night as well.
