TOPIC: Proposed GT Class Lottery Approach

Proposed GT Class Lottery Approach 7 years 2 months ago #85

I'm a vol and I've gotten one. You just let them know and they make things work.
Its easier now that the GT run happens on Wed instead of Thursday. It was more of a scheduling issue when the GT run happened during the con and you were a vol for a shift. But since its moved to wed and is a beta test run all the vols are around so its easy to find a replacement if you happen to be a critical vol. Also some vols can do their job as well as go on the run. Coaches for example are perfectly capable of coaching their GT run then participating in it.

The larger issue for some now is getting the ticket and not being able to get there on wed in time.
Sweet a combat room, we won't take damage!

The only thing it could be possibly overlap with would be the Wednesday night training. We did have extra Silver Ticket runs one year, those may have had more issues.

I wonder if it will be feasible at some point to have something like Silver Ticket tokens in the future randomly in the token packs for special runs at non-GENCON conventions. :)

have people been complaining about being on the GT runs and not having their class?

or is this finding a problem that does not exist?

I think it's ambiguous - multiple people have expressed they don't like "first come, first served."

Others have observed that "first come, first served" isn't the intention.

So, if there's a problem it's maybe more a communication or expectation one.

the randomness is in the way the tokens are found.

For GTs found during preorders, which is a substantial portion of them, the shipping time is a substantial factor in who finds their GTs when, and shipping time is not random, it's correlated with stable factors of USPS (and other carrier) routes.

As above, if the class allocation truly isn't first come first served, then there is no issue.

sure the big buyers have more chances in the GT lottery, they buy more tokens.

I don't think anyone disagrees with this, or wants to see a change to this..

what happens if the last GT is not found until the week before the con, that person would have no choice in what run or class they would have.

Isn't this how it works today?

How do you see this scenario as playing out differently between the status quo and the proposed system?

So since the tokens have arrived in the USA is it too early to claim a GT combat run as the Ranger?

Raven, Chad and Ian immediately spring to my mind. But I am sure there are a few more.

To my very limited knowledge they have done their GT runs.

I'm one, too.

The Powers-That-Be are beyond understanding and work our Volunteer training into not interfering with the GT Runs.

I know Druegar has done a GT run as a volunteer. I think it would really only be a problem for the ACs to do a GT run, but I am sure even then they would work it out so it could be done.

Again I could be wrong but I thought this came up before and that was his response. I will do some searching to see if I can find that.

It was just a thought. No need for anyone to respond to it.

My point was, and remains, that there are many ways to try to solve a problem, and pushing a solution without having all the inputs and considering the possibilities can be counterproductive.

I don't have a dog in this fight so I have no input as to if there is an issue or not or the best way to solve it if there is one. Just saw something that I thought Jeff had commented on before. I failed in my search though so maybe I am remembering incorrectly.

I do remember jmartin commenting the same thought as well.

I buy tokens in big volumes. I usually get a GT. when I get one, I look at the sign up sheet and pick what I can (95% a barbarian). I prefer combat, but have been on many puzzle runs and have played a fighter a few times. I like to open my packs as I go. on occasion that leads to not being able to chime in until others have claimed spots.

now I am 9th level and have arguably the best barbarian build. I bring lots of other "stuff", but I still only ask and will always work with folks. after all, they were better prepared, responded faster.

with everything considered from several sides of the issue, i'm coming up with this as a non-issue. :S

I agree. Last year I got my golden ticket in June, and I was still able to choose my preferred class.

As Harlax mentioned, the combat runs fill-up first and they were not an option for me, but I was so happy to just get a GT to care. I probably would have picked a puzzle run anyway.
