That should keep well-meaning players from diluting the loot boxes

Henwy had a "Take a token/Leave a token" box in the tavern many years back. Quite a few newbies appreciated it... but then later, people where pawing through it looking for the "good" stuff, and looting it for pretty much everything that wasn't junk. I believe he quit putting out the box after stories of people walking away with pockets overflowing.

Basically, if you're going to have any kind of token box for newbies to draw from, it would need to be supervised/policed, and it's not really worth TD's time to do that.

People are better off to give their spare tokens directly to other players if they don't need them.

I had a friend who owned a comic store. She had a "leave a penny - take a penny" bowl, and it usually overflowed. One day, a homeless guy walked in, dumped all the pennies on the counter and counted them out and asked "what can I buy with this?"

She "sold" him a pack of trading cards and after that didn't let the bowl get more than a half-dozen pennies at a time.

So, yeah. You're probably right. Greedy people ruin things for everyone.

Unwanted tokens? I can't get my head around that concept. ;)

I've heard "rumors" that such things exist. ;)
D&D teaches all the important lessons in life - the low blow, the cheap shot, the back stab, the double cross. - Jerry Marsischky

Lore and Rumor tokens come to mind. I can only say this because I don't own any. I would add SOME truecraft tokens but I do own some of them so I guess I want them.

Oh they are wanted, just not by all.
For the right price, I'll take them.

It's true you can't use them. It's true you can't transmute them. But it's also true that I still want them. :)

Just to give equal time - I think that slogan is more fitting for the Clintons. ;)

Perhaps chance the treasure boxes completely...

Have a piece of PVC pipe so the tokens can all sit onto of one another. The have a flat rectangular piece on the bottom the same thickness as the tokens. Similar to a gum ball style. You pull it and a token slices out and drops into your hand. Slide it in, another token falls into place. No 2 token doubles hanging on, no looking, no palming.

Slide it in and out as many time as you have tokens.

I tell you though, my six and eight year old that did ALL of my pulls last year really liked the manual labour. They also did not have a clue as to what was what, so it was great.

Both the PVP pipe and the wand really detract away from it being a treasure box.

At least the pipes could be dressed up as some kind of gnomish vending machine next year.

Still as sad as it is to loose a bit of innocence here, one only has to look at the current treasure chip market to see that Jeff is right to be proactive with a workaround.
