TOPIC: Interest in another 8k auction?

Interest in another 8k auction? 4 years 6 months ago #1

Seeing as Starkhound/Edwin's auction is at 98% with over a week to go I was wondering if there might be enough interest to run another after his ends on September 7.

What say you?

I'd bid if the bidding rules on multi-item auctions are such that:

1. All winning bids are the same.
2. The winning bid amount is set by the amount of the first bid that doesn't win any items.
3. Allocation of won items goes first to those with the hidden highest bid, tie breaking on earlier time of bid.

I'd bid on individual items if they are handled in an eBay style (e.g. price depends on 2nd highest bid only).

eBay doesn’t support bidding on multiple identical items.

What do you mean?

I mean that I think the way that the auctions have been held recently (unless I'm mistake) is close enough to eBay to me, and I'll be the first to admit that I don't know all the details of how the auctions are calculating the high bids. If there are 32 PYPs, I'm OK if it works out so that they don't all end up at the same price. I just don't want to bid on auctions if your high bid is the actual bid instead of a certain amount above the second highest bid.

Now that you've got me thinking about it though - it's probably not being handled quite like eBay. On eBay, if the auction starts at a penny, and you bid $100, the bid is at a penny until there's a second bidder, and then it has the high bidder being a certain increment above the second highest bidder. It seems like on the forum auctions the first bid is the actual bid (unless they actually list starting bids) and then the eBay rules don't really kick in until there is a second bidder. I might have that all backwards. :)

If there is a market for it, I'm totally willing to write TD auction software...

Nope. Perl, python, and shell. It's been forever since I did a Java project, so I figured it was time.

Someone should probably write a stickied set of auction rules...

I'd bid with or with out Matt's suggested rules.

If there is only 1 bid on an item, it is generally listed at $0.25, the bid increment above 0 (no bids)

How to process bids is definitely being discussed more here.

There are a few different ways to do it.

Java here. Working on some play code on this problem in the background if you want to compare notes.
