I am sure they would but based upon most people's complaints it would be too far from the Convention Center.

Having done the overnight camp out before the race (once, never again thank you) I don't recommend the experience.

Unless you enjoy large numbers of drunks yelling and holding up signs urging passing females to display portions of their anatomy. (That's the family friendly explanation, of course).

Interesting article on study of ICC expansion and possible new connected downtown hotel.

All pretty vague at this point of course.

If you must stay downtown then we always book outside block and then hope for a block room.

But all in all this new system sucks.

Thank you. Wish it was that easy to get a room!

My first GenCon was #17 at Parkside. I went with 2 D&D friends, a young nephew, and my parents in my family's RV. We stayed in a near-by camp ground.

GenCon outgrew Parkside and moved to Milwaukee. Milwaukee was GREAT! I loved that town! I ran multi-round D&D and miniature tourneys there. GenCon used to have bands like They Might Be Giants play concerts in the streets (no disrespect for the current musical talent).

But alas, GenCon outgrew Milwaukee and moved to Indy. I had never been to Indy before, but I found the good restaurants and bars and now I like Indy too.

Has GenCon outgrown Indy? In some ways I hope so. In some ways I hope not (only a 3-hour drive). (where are the flying cars or high-speed trains???)

Go to Wikipedia and look at the attendance numbers for GenCon.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gen_Con

The trend says if we haven't, then we will soon out grow Indy.

Having traveled the world, I agree a city with a subway or other train system might be the future of GenCon. Chicago?

And I agree with the above poster... why isn't TD at Origins??? (Yes I live in Columbus).

Re: Room Reservations 9 years 3 months ago #69

honestly the only days I feel crowded are saturday in the dealer hall. So I now get all my shopping done thursday and never go back in there. eating..i eat off hours to avoid the people.
as far as gaming there is plenty of room
if it moves to Chicago or another bigger city people will be complaining about prices..the hotels will be more..a lot more

hopefully Indy can get another super bowl so they will expand everything again. few more hotels and more space added to convention center..maybe add another floor?

to me the problem is Magic/ other things that take way too much room and dont need it( i mean they have so much space not being used) while TD uses almost every inch it can

granted I dont play Magic so I dont go in there..maybe they need all that extra non used space

-Lazlo MTG/WoTC's domain can feel empty and cavernous at times. I've also seen it just about full to the brim especially when a major event is going. Speaking a MTG playing TD player i'm either in TD or over in that area.

WoTC (Wizards of The Coast) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hasbro. I doubt they would willingly shrink their space. Sad that most of the ccgs budget space on absolute maximum event during once in the con and very rarely do things like actual consistent attendance come into account.

Overall I don't truly believe that Gencon has outgrown Indy. More of steps need to be put into place to better pull together the fact that a larger base is staying out of downtown (price/sheer attendance). A better managed expanded shuttle system, something that when a non downtown room is booked that i can pre sign up for so gencon knows where the heavy users/concentrations are going to be and can plan accordingly. Right now as given the shuttle is a joke/borderline useless to lots of people.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

I also don't think GENCON has outgrown Indy. It's true that not everyone can get into Downtown hotels, but there are other hotel options. And, I think that Indy may expand their capacity as well. I read an article recently where the Indy commission is looking at further expansion of the Convention Center and/or adding another downtown hotel, even if we don't get another Superbowl. I hope GENCON and True Dungeon stay in Indy forever. :)

like i said I dont go in, but everytime i walk by it is empty-ish

as far as the shuttle system..maybe the hotels could start running something..like courtyard by airport could have pick up on the hour every hour..this could be like $10 a day or something. If I was one of those hotels that is what I would try

if you have to stay out a ways..contact them now and ask if they would be willing to do something like that. they may not have thought of it
