I've still got like 7 of them. Meant to use them but never got around to it.

There are lots of reasons why the following couldn't or wouldn't be done, but GenCon is all about fantasy, so here's my dream:

TD sponsors a traders' guild. If two parties work out a deal that involves cash, they fill out a slip with their badge numbers on it, buyer takes it to the TD store who collects the cash (no credit cards) and validates the slip (ka-chunk). The buyer returns to the seller to trade the slip and any tokens that are part of the deal to the seller, and they swap.

The slip of course if full of legal mumbo jumbo saying TD is not responsible or liable in any way for Bad Stuff(tm) that may happen.

Later, the seller returns to the store and trades the slip for cash, less TD's vig of 5-10%(?) with a min of $1 (?) and a max of $10 (?)

Buyer can return the slip for a full refund in case the deal goes south at the last second.

OR - TD could create Platinum Dragons - gift certificate tokens in denominations of $1, $5, $10 and $100 or something. Available only at GenCon, TD sells them at face value and guarantees to buy them back for cash at 90 or 95%, or they can be used to buy stuff at the store or online. Same effect, maybe easier to deal with, but without the buyer money-back guarantee. (Yes, GP serve a lot of the same function, but there's not a quick and sure way to convert GP to cash, or for players to buy GP on-site for trading, except from vendors.)

Since all cash passes through an approved vendor the constables don't come down on anyone, and since TD gets a taste it helps compensate for the hassle of bringing on an extra volunteer to help run it, and it makes it safe for buyers and sellers to (effectively) swap cash on-site without risking their badges.

Third option - TD offers to just buy and sell GP at the store. Almost everyone will hate that one, and I just list it for the sake of completeness.

I would use either service, especially for smaller deals where I don't want to run across the street for a $5 deal. (The more I think about it, I like the second one best.)

... and then Brad woke up, murmuring "What a beautiful dream..." :)

There is some precedent for this sort of activity at GenCon. Several of the large TCG companies sell stuff outside the vendor hall. And at this point, I have to think TD counts as a large vendor. 8000 or so tickets at $48 a pop, the zero's stack up fast.

I think all that is too much a headache for TD.
I am not lazy so I can walk across the street to do a transaction.

For a few hundred, neither am I. For $2, packing up, going over, coming back and unpacking - since I never seem to have someone around to watch my stuff - I kind of am :)

Maybe this is the simplest: if TD sold transferable gift certificates in any way, shape or form, I would accept them at face value. I'd just use them for next year's token order anyway. But then Jeff would make them way cool and I'd want to keep one hanging on the wall next to my Alchemist Ink voucher... so I would hope at least one of them was for just a buck or two.

Agreed, that would be the one catch all. Though a four day pass doesn't include Wednesday.

balthasar wrote: The entire ICC is actually private property, I do believe they can have you removed from that property, even if you do not have a badge. You couldn't go into a Walmart and start selling stuff to someone. Just follow the advice of the more experienced players and conclude your business outside :)

"The Indiana Convention Center & Lucas Oil Stadium is managed by the Capital Improvement Board of Managers (CIB) created in 1965 by the Indiana General Assembly and empowered to finance and manage capital improvements." Sounds like public property to me. Though renting it out may fit the terms of private for the rental time frame.

I had thought there would have been more heat from my comments. Glad there wasn't, as it was just food for thought (and been hashed out in past years as well). I remember others in the past commenting about someone going around to the adjacent hotels and checking badges, which I thought would have been out of bounds.

There's the ICC, and there's GenCon. The geographic Venn diagram has a lot of overlap, but I don't know what contracts the hotels signed.

I agree the ICC probably has no jurisdiction over the hotels, but GenCon may.

But if they take your badge and you can't sort it out until Monday, being right won't be very satisfying.

For Wednesday night, just don't wear a badge

And I'd trust you and a dozen others I could name, but won't because I'd leave out one or six and they'd being going "HEY!" :) In the past, it just hasn't worked out that way.
