In 2013 our plans call for us to add an additional adventure to the event. There will be two consecutive adventure modules, and each module will have two variations of either a combat or puzzle orientation. The first module called “Lycans Afoot” tasks the party to travel through a dark forest in search of a tower, while the second module called “Golembane” challenges the party to reach the top of tower.

TOPIC: How have you died in TD?

Re: How have you died in TD? 10 years 11 months ago #25

My first death was my first run, it was the second year of TD and we didn't get to do the event the first year (we couldn't find it... but probably didn't try that hard). I was the Wizard as I have been ever since and made it to the second to last room where the invisible wiz or something was targeting me with magic missiles. since then most deaths have occurred in the final room when we don't succeed as a party but we did get a TPK a 2 years ago on a nightmare run. A few players were noobs and by room 4 we were all dead. We didn't intend to do a nightmare run, it was the year when they nightmare run was assigned based on the time you had your run... we got killed quick fast in a hurry. we got to keep going as ghosts so we could see the rooms which was kewl but damn!

I have not died, except to Smoak the first year. I still don't count that, either.

I died in the very first true dungeon. I still blame our rogue for taking the t-shirt (blasted rogue). And I discovered that year just how much I didnt enjoy playing the ranger.

Deaths I have enjoyed - by Darcey R Eaper.
My first TD year was when it first came to Gen Con West, pulled into the Respect-able crypt at the end.

The next death, same year, was being blown off the bridge. (And just in case you remember this dungeon the reason I died later in the bridge room was I had missed that room on my first run as I was spider food).

When I returned to TD, my next death was being blown to bits by the Beholder. But I did say something about its mom.

I am not sure if being turned to stone and then being returned to normal counts but the Medusa did me in if it does.

After that we got serious in token collecting and preparation, and death has only come at full on stupidity.

First, death was not realizing in Nightmare mode the answer changed from "The Four Elements" to "The Scion of the Elements" or whatever it was, then not having time to heal before the next room.

The next one was having someone manipulate the Minute Hands on the clock (instead of the minute (small) hands on the center dial) on Nightmare mode and not giving all of us time to heal between each wrong guess.

Still PUGs have high risks where as coordinated teams tend to do well.
Smoak, by default, killed us as we ran out of time the first year that beast plagued the realms.

So in the end death claims each of us in our own way. But in the end, we return from the shadow realm and battle on.

Realizing that the question is "how have you died" and given that I have already piped up to that effect... I'd like to add, that I have NOT heard of anyone killed by either a shrubbery OR a ROUS - and I find that most curious...

Also as deaths go - being killed by a giant bacon might not be the worst of ways to go. :silly:

They say that the best weapon is the one you never have to use. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to use once! Oh - and if you really need to think about whether you're going to use the fireball or the + umpty staff of butt-whooping - you're likely to find yourself full of arrows, or fangs, or nasty knives & swords and such. Don't think - just shoot!

I died in my first run through TD and was hopping mad for years about it. A DM wrongly TPKed my entire group halfway through the dungeon and we were the last run of the convention so tear-down was happening right behind us. THere was no way to do another run or get the fubar sorted out.

Since then I'm sure i've died a few times in last rooms across the years. Since I do so many runs, I tend to suicide on purpose sometimes in last puzzle rooms of the choose and if you're not right you die variety. It's like the Bard from Gamers 2: Dorkness Rising strategy of puzzle solving. I'll get the answer eventually.

As for non-last room dying I had one in grind at the least but nothing else comes to mind.

Most of my deaths have been failures in the final dungeon room (I'm looking at you, Smoak). One of the more shocking ones entailed being one-shotted in my first ever Nightmare combar (friggin' siren did exactly my number of hp). In general, though, I've been able to weather the push damage when ou group wasn't able to figure out puzzle after puzzle.

TPK on Smoak in 2011 - First TD run so I was ok with making it to the last room alive

TPK on the Lich puzzle in 2011 - that crap was hard

TPK on Smoak in 2012 - I'm gonna get her one day, I swear it!!

Finished the puzzle version of Draco-Lich Undone in 2012 thanks to really good teamwork and some team mates memorizing the right clues.

Can't remember how we did on Giant's Trevail last year. I do remember that our Wizard in one of the runs last year died by drinking the wrong thing though on one of the puzzles. He had made up his mind that he was right on his own, and he paid for it. Tip for the wise: Consult your party before drinking the koolaid.

Push damage seems to be the biggest thing that leads to future death in my previous runs. Both times we died on Smoak, we were left beaten after taking so much push damage from puzzles we couldn't figure out, she wiped the floor with us after just a few rounds. Payback is a b!tch though, I plan to take her out this year.

These were all PUGs on Normal, since it was just me and two friends going to the con, and very little investment in tokens.

The old school ways actually sound pretty awesome.. death coming in to take you away, and you getting to play him for your survival? How epic is that? Maybe they should bring that back as a Nightmare only option.
