I think the black back idea sounds awesome! So, how does one go about getting one or two of these ultra-cool, ultra-rare, black backed tokens?

I am quickly becoming a tokenholic... =D

If it's simply black--onyx doesn't work that well, because it is typically banded.
Obsidian doesn't make that much sense, because it whoever heard of a coin made of glass??
Jet does make sense, so I would suggest going with that.

I thought Henwy would like the fairie part.
Okay...then we will go with the black tokens but the fronts will be identical to the regular UR tokens.

Cool. Sounds like it will be fun -- and neat to see some black tokens about. One last thing. We can't call them "black" -- they need a cooler name that is a metal like gold or platinum.

What about just calling them "iron"? I know that iron is traditionally a less expensive metal, but it fits well. I would almost say go with our current theme and call them "faerie-iron" but I am not sure. What about "obsidian" or even something like "Orc Iron" or "High Iron"?

Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Obsidian came to mind as I read this (before I got to the point where Jeff mentions obsidian). Did a quick little research, here is another neat alternative:

Sable - The color black, especially in heraldry. (from answers.com)

Sable has my vote. I too immediately thought obsidian but I think that's because of the Obsidian dagger. If you really want a black metal though I think you would have to go with the black metal that Tolkien came up with in LoTR's. I just can't remember it off the top of my head. I'll have to wait until my husband comes back. Eog or something I think. Hmm isn't raw or cold iron black? Or you could just come with your own name like Dark Iron Metal. I'll have to think on this a little more.

Lady Myke

My husband just got back and suggested Adamantine from DnD.

My husband is looking it up but he's saying that Mithril is silver and Adamantine is black. He was looking it up but got distracted by the baby. After all most descriptions of Admantine weapons I have read they were black but I have been known to be out to lunch on things like this. The metal in LoTR's was Eog or Galvorn by the way. Galvorn was cannon black. Hey maybe we should just go with Cast Iron as the name!

Lady Myke

Popular conception is that it's metalic colored. Thanks to marvel more than anything else I'd wager. Still, that's pretty much what you have to stick with. It wouldn't very much matter if in first edition, gygax said that diamonds were polkadotted and sapphires plaid.

I like onyx best, or obsidian. Sable is fur to me--I don't think it would make sense as a token back.

If onyx wins out then I get a percentage for the naming rights, right?
Old school DnD had Adamantium as black I think...wasn't Balck Razor the name of the soul stealing sword in White Plum Mountain?
That is correct!

How about Cobalt?
