TOPIC: Very Latest Ultra Rare Tokens!

Re: Very Latest Ultra Rare Tokens! 15 years 7 months ago #61
Not for me. I've got more than enough tokens and I think we even showed convincingly we could even survive without them this year. Looking at the tokens now, I'm more interested in long term stability than power gains for whatever class I might be playing. It's practically all butter anyway by now.

Amen, we cannot forget long-term stability... and that means making sure the token sets work well for new players who are just starting this year. We want them to be excited and intrigued like we all were the first time we bought tokens.

As for Druid armor and weapons- I think the circlet gives the Druid a chance to be a front-line fighter in one combat per run (most likely the end fight), and I like it. But, do we really want to start down the path of making the Druid a tank for the group? (Ok, in WoW, Druids can tank... but old D&D, well, Druids were always kind of a second class Cleric who really only got to shine in wilderness adventures... so which version are we building out here in True Dungeon?) Limited polymorph and tanking seems like a nice alternative to turning the Druid into a full-fledged fighter.

I can't see making sets where some classes can use some of the set items but not all of them.

It's been done - at least once
Gary aka: Grimwood, Cleric of the Western Woods CLERIC for life - I have the character card to prove it! Former owner of a Ring of Three Wishes and Jeff's finger!
It's a terrific set this year, Jeff. We've got some great new twists in the game - Runestones and Polymorphing, there are no consumable URs, more sets are coming up and old favorites are back, the graphics are fabulous, and we can't WAIT to get our hands on these tokens!

Thanks for including us and listening to us!

THANK YOU!
Give me your thoughts on these final changes:

Circlet of Elemental Mastery: Okay, so you aren't thrilled with the graphic. I will get another one. I was going for the whole "the 3 different gems represent the 3 types of damage" thing, but I am getting no love for that. I will go with something more medieval.

I don't like the picture either, sorry. And I already stated how I don't see the transmutation of energy types as being UR worthy. If it also afforded some form of protection from elemental damage (1 or 2 points), I could see it then.

Crown of Might: The other two items will be the Orb of Might (it will take up a shield slot, but anyone can use it) and the Scepter of Might (weapon - anyone can use). These items are all about making yourself more powerful in combat -- but at a cost. The Orb will have the ability to absorb two points of damage from each melee attack, while the Scepter is a +1 2-9 weapon that reduces the monster's AC by one every time it hits (-4 AC limit per combat). If one person is so lucky or brazen as to possess all three Objects of Might, that person is raised to 4th level. Note, however, that the objects of Might are greatly hated by all evil creatures and these creatures will get +2 to hit you.

I think the level raise is a good solution for the ownership of all three. What happens when you get two situations which raise level? (i.e. Amulet of Wonder and full set of Mighty stuff)

Mithral Helmet: Someone sent me a cool pic of a steel cap (honestly, I did not know they existed!) so I think I will take the good suggestion and make it a Mithral Cap usable by normal helm users plus Bards and Rangers (sorry Rogues!) It will have this power: "Adds +1 to AC plus immunity to undead mind control". I had to knock it down to +1 AC since so many classes can use it. Besides, it's small. This set will have a 3-item and a 5-item set power. The 3-item power: +2 to hit with the Mithral sword vs. undead. The 5-item power will be released in 2011.

Dang, I liked the look of the Mithral Helm... save that photo for a special Dwarven artifact someday. Like others the whole "undead mind control" seems very limited... short of a lich, what undead use mind control? Oh, yeah... vampires do... hmmmm. Don't know what to say about the set issues... I like the "of Might" set raising the character a level and it would be nice is every class had a set of special items that a player could collect to get that bonus. Is there a way to structure sets such that we can plan out sets to make sure every class has something by 2011? And without sets "blowing the curve" on power levels?

Last of the typographical/consistency things. Some of these hinge on the changes mentioned over on the Common-Rare thread.

+2 Double-Edged Sword - If result is 3 then wielder also takes 3 pts. of damage Fighter
Celestial Bracers - +2 to AC
Circlet of the Arch-Druid - Sacrifice 2 spells of 2nd lvl. to polymorph into Dire Bear Druid
Crown of Might - +1 to AC
Dragonscale Shield - +3 to AC & -1 damage from fire
Gearon's +2 Blessed Mace - +3 to damage vs. undead in hands of Cleric
Mithral Cap - +1 to AC & immunity to undead mind control
Plat Armor of Absorption - +8 to AC & -1 damage from melee
Questor's Charm of Luck - 1 extra token for each "20" slid during combat
Ring of Fire Elemental Command - -5 damage from fire & fire elemental will not attack wearer & does 2 pts. fire damage to any monster that hits wearer in melee
SeyLah's +2 Cestus of Shock - +5 shock damage on any "20"

That out of the way. I really like the set and the chance to help shape it. I can't wait to get my tokens. It is going to be very hard to choose my PYP. Maybe I'll have to order enough for two... =D
After comparing the 2Edge to all the other magic weapons, and especially UR ones, I think either one of two things would have to happen to make it balanced- either more damage than "3" is dispensed as the drawback for the high average damage the thing deals or change the "14" to a "12". Does anyone else feel this way?

I love the graphic for it, could we get a different glowing color for it though? Considering its nature (harms it's weilder), red makes sense to me.

doesn't the new change make the Mithral cap much better than the Crown of might?
-Master Li Lou Bahn, Terror of the East, Master of Shadows, Pillager of the province of Ch'in, Mandarin of the Emporer Shou Wei, Ambassador to the foreign devils of the West, and the most dangerous ninja in all of Greyhawk."cause I'm the only ninja in all of Gwehawk!!!"

not all classes can use the mithral cap, but all can use the crown.
Of all the traits of humanity, there is only one we do not share with other species, which sets us apart and makes us unique
-- the ability to imagine.

Also the crown is part of a 3 year set that will grant +1 to character level on completion. Makes it a difficult choice. Especially if you can complete the Mithral set now if you get the cap.

I may have to get the crown and then not use it for 3 years... =|

Having to make tough PYP decisions is a sign we have some juicy tokens this year! I am waiting myself for the Mithril "Everfull" Tankard.

Yeah, that's a good point Binia. At the end of the day Jeff has to live with these for good. But at the same time, he has to get people to want to acquire them, so it is a double edged sword (pun intended). As for the crown, I don't consider it very "creeping" to add one AC point to classes that can't wear a helm. I continue to see the crown as underpowered but in the context of a three item set and not knowing what the other two items do, it's impossible to be sure at this time.

I don't think "creep" is a pervasive issue for all classes. The "creep" problem is manifested in the fighter type classes, that present the most powerful weapons and can maximize their AC beyond any other class and way beyond the average player in the game. The ability to deliver max damage and defend with max AC sets these people apart and will drive "creep" issues going forward in my opinion. It seems to me that the wizard, bard, rogue, druid, monk, even ranger can hit some level of damage although far less than a maxed out fighter or paladin. These classes with the exception of the wizard can all use medium level defenses and reach some level of AC, although far less than a maxed out fighter or paladin. It's true that fighter and paladin SHOULD be highest in these criteria, as long as they don't get too far off the chart. Commensurate with their improvements, the other classes need to improve in their respective special skills (and I see some of that happening). I don't think there are any "creep" issues for the non-fighter classes. The bard has had some significant improvements. Same for the monk and rogue. This is the year of the druid it would seem. That's cool. I hope to see the year of the wizard come up soon, where improvements are all in the form of magics that really transform the class. Right now, wizard strikes me as the weakest in a relative sense.

It's a bit amusing you mentioned that, since traditionally it's been the Bard and the Druid who have had the best AC in True Dungeon, and the fighter/tank types (Fighter/Paladin) have been complaining that they should really have the higher AC. (Druids get +4 AC from Dexterity, Bards also get a Dexterity bonus and *used to* get an additional +4 from the Mage Armor Scroll). It's only been recently (in the past year or two) that things have shifted slightly back in favor of the tank classes (such as with the Tower Shield +1).

3) What are the current 2nd level Druid spells that we have to pick from to activate the Circlet?

She has 3 2nd level spells: Flame Blade (2) Bull Strength (1)

You know, I could have sworn that the Druid only has a single Flame Blade spell, but that she also has access to Slow Poison....
