TOPIC: Radical change to Common Tokens (discussion)

Agreed.

Sure is nice to find unexpected (but sometimes hoped-for) treasure.
However, you might also begin to wonder if it belongs to someone who came through the room before you and should you try to return it?

I suppose if the DM knew that it was there, at least the DM would be able to tell the finder, "yes; someone left that token there for people to find it."
I think one of the main places that he was placing treasure tokens was in the cave at the beginning.

Kim

It is a dungeon consistency thing - at least that was how it was explained to me after the year I dropped tokens in the dungeon.

Ever since I have opted not to drop - but instead hand out tokens to folks who turn in "Lost and Found" items. I also tend to reward folks who bring back TD props or player cards etc. after walking out of the event!

(hey you know - I found a +1 Orc Flail on the rock in the entry Cave on one adventure...but the other three runs I went on I did not find a token there!!!) Kim and John said it well...it is cool and at the same time it is a problem...people will chatter about what they find with other people on runs OR worse, going on runs...and that is when expectations get out of whack and complaints flow to the Directors.

We need to all protect the Directors from complaints as much as possible since they have so many other things they could be working on!

My husband found a token in the cave entryway as well.

Kim

On my first run, the cave DM said we could keep any tokens we found laying around in the room - I think someone ended up with one of the red salves.

I know I dropped a few tokens so there may have been some from me. Of course you are not going to be able to stop people from leaving tokens in a room. The best you are going to do is just make sure the people don't destroy a room trying to find something that's not there. Always ask a DM first before touching something! Rule # (something) from TD 101!

I found this box in one room, with this squiggly indentation on top, that once broken open yielded a large amount of tokens =D

(Kidding, of course!)

I think that if you're going to seed the dungeon with tokens that you should ask Jeff personally if it is OK and then only seed it with items that will not give an advantage in any of the rooms (such as dropping a rope token in the key puzzle room) and that they should be mundane things, like a long sword or some common armor or some of the uncommon consumables (such as a potion of owl's wisdom) or some minor healing consumables. Also, if you find some tokens that you think have been left as seeds for other people and if you don't need them, then leave them for someone else. And IF you are going to seed the dungeon with some rare tokens you should do it in such a way that it is absolutely clear that they were not accidentally dropped, such as balancing it between two of the stones that make up the dungeon walls. One does not accidentally drop a token five feet up on a wall!

If you're going to give away rare tokens I think it is best to go into the marshalling area and try to find some first-time True Dungeoneers and give them something that will make them want to keep coming back to True Dungeon. I've given out quite a few +1 weapons to youngsters over the years and they have all been extremely grateful.

I think Jeff is on record saying this is not ok...(hopefully he chimes in...officially...)

This came up 2 maybe 3 years ago...and was basically frowned upon as causing inconsistent dungeons and potentially harmful to the event experience for a few groups...

I meant accidentally! I was clumsy and dropped some tokens and don't know (and don't care) if I found all of them before I had to go onto the next room. I understand where Jeff doesn't want people intentionally seeding the rooms with tokens but come on someone will drop something at some point in time! Anyways I do think that you should not purposefully place tokens around in the dungeon. I to want to be able to experience the dungeon fully and completely. I love the hands on stuff and would love to find tokens lying around but not at the expense of the dungeon or DM's. :)

Lady Myke

You know this comes up almost every year - this should be a FAQ or something.

Maybe there should be a FORUM section dedicated to all the TD DOs and DON'Ts...

I'll be happy to write a few down - if this helps!
I have mixed feelings about tokens dropped in the dungeon. I've heard that if a player finds a token in the dungeon, then they get to keep it. But what happens when someone drops a purple? Usually the player comes back to my room frantic. I then go looking for it. And sometimes I find it, but often I don't. I think any token found on the floor of the dungeon should be given to the DM. Period. That's how I've been running my rooms all this time. Seems like something else to get clarification on and add to the FAQ.
