TOPIC: New 2009 Purple tokens (speculation)

Re: New 2009 Purple tokens (speculation) 15 years 8 months ago #37

with saves like the Druid has....PFFFT on the Druid!

I know, Bro - a +2 Scimitar that gives a Druid an additional +3 on all savings throwns!

What no AC bonus to go along with the saving rolls?

Great point, how's this instead?: +2 Scimitar of Ste'Ele: +2 to Savings Throws AND +2 to AC in hands of Druid

How's about this for Wizards:
Cloak of Misdirection - Once per room, an attack that would have hit you is redirected to another party member instead, using the monster's original attack roll.

That's a kewl idea. I'd probably keep my Cloak of the Mage, though.

What if all 8 party members had one? That would be one dizzy monster!

Isn't this what the Ring of Sanctuary essentially does already? The Ring is slightly worse, but it's the same basic concept.

My predictions: Looking over at the 2006 -> 2007 transition, I would guess another 75% turnover in UR's.

I agree that the Lute and the Tinkering Tool will be rotated out (as named items) and that the Dragonscale Helm will be replaced by the Dragonscale Shield.

Long Sword +2, Girdle, and Gloves are mainstays and will probably stick around a bit more. Ring of Focus and the Keen Scimitar have been around for a while and are useful, but it may be time to finally retire those. And I do think that the Cloak of the Mage will get rotated out.

I think they'll bring back the Full Plate +1 or an equivalent Purple +8/+9 AC armor. Normally I'd say they'd keep the Tower Shield +1 but if they bring back the Dragonscale Shield, then two purple shields will probably too much. Troll Hide Armor will probably get rotated back out for Mithral Chain or another +5/+6 AC usable by lots of classes.

I think the Amulet of Wonder will stick around (since they already need to design an ability each year for it). Plus more Amulets around mean less people will use the HOPs. I also think the Special ? tokens (and the Rumor tokens at the lower rarity levels) will be brought back again next year.

The Great Club of Bashing will probably be replaced by a new purple two-handed weapon. Maybe the +2 Great Axe, but more likely something new (maybe with a special bonus for Fighters?). Not the Holy Great Sword though. I'd say the +1 Mighty Longbow gets replaced by a new ranged weapon. I wouldn't be surprised if they use the opportunity to reprint the +1 Heavy Repeating Crossbow (especially now that there are useful bolts). Bracer of Quivering Palm will probably be replaced by another purple Monk token (maybe a new bracer?). Hourglass is out (replaced by new consumables).

In terms of other reprints, I'm sort of expecting the Cloak of Displacement and the Hand of Glory to see chippy versions eventually. Some people think Gearon's Mace would come back and though it is due for a chippy, I would think that if they had wanted to bring it back, it would have been brought back this year (instead of the Mace of Dispelling) so I would put my money on "no" for 2009. And though +2 Bracers will eventually be made more available, I don't think they'd be purps in a PYP scheme since they'd become "must-haves" for most of the classes.

Among the other weapons, I think the Mithral Long Sword is most likely to stay another year, followed by the Broadsword, and then perhaps the Mace of Dispelling.

Those are my $0.02.

Now that GenCon is over it is time to start plotting for next year. Historically Jeff rotates some purple token out of the collection and brings some new (or reissued) tokens. What tokens are you hoping for/expecting?

My guesses for incommng:

1. Dragon Scale shield replacing DS Helm (I bet we get a 3 year rotation here with the DS items). The DS shield is just too rare at the moment.

2. Bracers +2. I really want a set or 3. This is one of the few items that could get me to increase my token buy from last year.

3. +1 Platemail OR Platemail of thorns (normal platemail + amulet of thorns). We need a purple fighter/paladin armor in the rotation.

4. Some sort of missle weapon for Druids, rogues. A sling of accuracy?

My Guesses for outgoing:

1 and 2. Widseth's lute and Ektdar's Tools. Named items dont tend to last long.

3. Hourglass of Imprisonment. Did anyone buy one of these with the intent to use it?

4. Dragon scale Helm. Expect rotation in DS set.

5. +2 Scimitar. There just are not that many druids.

As a weapon for the Ranger I think it would be cool to see a Rod of Thunder and Lightening. Essentially turn it into a +2 Javelin that does 4 extra points of electricity damage. Though an actual Rod Of Thunder and Lightening would be awesome to see in TD. Of course I play bard ;/(ahem quiet you Widseth!) and had the chance to play wizard this year. I make a lousy ranger but still had fun messing things up when I had to try and shoot two tokens at once! hehehe.

Lady Myke

Please dont bring back +2 Bracers. :violent4: The AC power creep is getting out of control. It basically gives all classes except wizards and monks +2 AC the two classes that need it the most LOL. Assuming the wizard chooses braclets and the monk Quivering palm. Make 2009 unique ALL NEW PURPS!!!!!
5th level Monk
"If done right, no can defense"
STR:23 DEX:15 CON:16 INT:12 WIS:17 CHA:10
HP:35 AC:16 SAVES: Fort:+14 Ref:+12 Will:+16
Greater Flurry Melee: +1 Dragonfist Bracer/Quivering Bracer Hit:+10/+9 Min Damage:14/13 Max Damage:19/20
Ranged Combat(thrown): +1 Keen Handaxe Hit:+5 ...

oh, see, this is a good line of thinking for ranger...except they need to be two weapons: a +2 longsword of thunder (+ sonic damage) and a +2 short sword of lightning (+ electric damage). now THAT would be cool. sure, they are usable by many different classes, but only ranger gets to attack with thunder AND lightning.

I shudder to bring this up (for fear of getting shot, stabbed, and then shot again), but what about a pair of blades for the Ranger? You could have two unique bladed weapons (say a +1 Scimitar and a +1 short sword) but when wielded by the same person each would be a +2 weapon. I know that this idea probably won't fly because it would take up to valuable ultra rare "slots" for a give year, but it is something to think about.

I really want to see a +2 Heavy Mace. Nothing special just something for us clerics who cant seem to get their hands on a Gearons.

I don't think it would be a bad idea at all, as I seen most rangers are looking for two purple weapons to wield anyway. The Rangers that want it would just have to buy more, get lucky and find a "00" bag with the other in it, or heaven forbid it might promote trading.

Also do you all think that PYP will return or will it go back to being Random? Would leave to hear your thoughts about pre-ordering and at the Con.
