TOPIC: New 2009 Purple tokens (speculation)

Re: New 2009 Purple tokens (speculation) 15 years 8 months ago #109

I was looking at it from a fighter standpoint. I think I would choose that combo over the more AC, especially since it would open up a ring slot for me. Honestly it doesn't have to even be a +2 to AC.

That's usually the problem when it comes to designing purps. The helm would be a great snag because it's a huge boost to 3 classes. If you limited it to fighters/paladins only though...would anyone even want one? It becomes a little more iffy. It's hard to find a balance between something that's useful without being out of whack. I think TD should think seriously hard about adding any new item that boosts max ac for any class at this point. AC 32 is ridiculous as it is. No need to be making it worse. I do like the idea of sets of equipment though, sorta like something out of the world of MMORPG's, right? The only thing there is I'm not sure we want to encourage people to be swapping outfits mid-dungeon. Small ring changes are one thing, but if the set bonuses became interesting enough, people might be tempted to constnatly adjust for each room as they go.

After looking with the +2 to AC it wouldn't change the Barbarian AC at all just give him the ring ability, the Rogue can't wear Troll Hide anyway. So the Ranger gets a little boost, I don't see a big deal with that, and thats if he can even wear a helm since he can't wear the dragonscale.

See - now that is a rule I think most would understand and support (even with a bag of holding).

Armor could be an "all adventure" item, once on in the Muster room - that is it for the adventure. (Helms, bracers shields excluded)

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree about whether AC creep is a problem then. I'd be looking for zero sum additions now.

Have people actually been doing a lot of swapping of rings and such? I usually plan for things liek that then abandon them because I can't be bothered to frak with it mid-dungeon. The only time I've ever done a mid-dungeon swap it was to equip other people with rings of fire resistance for the save and die drider.

I think it only happened once in my room, A Ring of Focus to cast a spell but that was it. I know the group that I went through with didn't do it.

There's a heck of a lot of advantages to switching equipment around from minute to minute if you're just anal enough to keep up with it. Just think of it....an entering the next room outfit that features a cloak of elvenkind and ring of the eye. A reach into the hole in the wall outfit that has all the save rings or periapts of proof against poison and boots of the leopard for possible traps. So far, that sort of care hasn't been necessary really. Most of us can swat down the dungeon wtihout too many problems equipped as we are, or even unequipped as commando showed. If there were ever some sort of TD competition though....see which team advanced the furtherest or lasted the longest, I'm sure we'd see some monumental swaps.

Hmmm, why don't we do that one year? A TD 'tower of terror' type setup to see how many rooms you make it through. The design would be to really swat a party flat. Something like out of the old tomb of horrors. Maybe when there's more space.
combo armor is KEWL!

Haha! I think so too. I just came up with the idea off the top of my head, but I really do like the idea of being tempted to maybe take a lower AC in exchange for different benefits, like the effect of a ring of regen. Something to make the decisions a little bit harder and a little bit more subjective.

It was so hectic in there in some rooms and for nightmare most of the rooms that we barely had time to think about the best combination for any situation, never mind actually taking a round to make the change. Henwy, I agree with your AC creep issue but only for the fighter classes. I think the mage, rogue, bard, etc. can stand a little more protection, as long as TD allows all players in a room equal chance of attack, and perhaps AC adding items coupled with non combat effects also. I also think TD should look at multiple function items with one of the functions being disadvantageous when coupled with one or two favorable effects e.g. the super sword that unbalances you if you roll a very low score, or one of my favorites, the super fine max AC shield with the small hole in one spot carefully covered with paper and painted to look like the original. If the enemy roles a critical, you got hit in the paper. That was a great one.

It could be like that episode of Knights of the Dinner Table when B.A. revealed to the group that one of the adventures was the monster manual, from A to Z, and Bob of Dave said that that had been the best adventure of all time. For TD just create 4 rooms, put a group in each room, and then just start cycling through the various slider boards. As each monster is defeated (or defeats a group) the people behind the scenes rotate them to the next room. It would be a monster round robin meets tower of terror.

Maybe this could be an activity at TD:DC. Instead of or in addition to True Arena people could participate in TD Iron Man: Survival of the Fittest!
