I must agree, if the beholder abilities were DC 12 saves, especially on hardcore, then they should have been raised because they need to hand out an arsewhooping. On that note I have picked out through this and that topic that hardcore is getting tweeked for next year.

I'm curious to learn the survival rate... it was somewhat high I am ashamed to admit. You'd be surprised how many parties made short work of it in one or two rounds. Even after we bumped its AC, its HP and its save DC after the first morning. It was not rare for a party to have multiple players buffed up to a +4, 5 or 6 to hit and even more to damage!

In hind sight Mike and I would have run it a bit differently. The creature had up to 3 ray attacks per zone (front, left, right, back). We decided early on to only do one attack per player if they were spread out enough (and we were happy to subtley suggest you surround it). So as battle wore on and say only one person was standing in a zone, instead of attacking that player 3 times as we could have, we attacked only once, but used the most deadly ray for that sector. We started that way thinking it would be still be deadly enough and by the time we realized it wasn't, we didn't want to change for the sake of consistency through the days.

Yes, I believe HC will be tweaked a bit. I know that 3 levels has also been suggested, but no idea if it will be considered.
I hope we don't have 3 levels. That is too complicated for the DMs.

I think two levels is fine. Level 1 - Reasonable, Level 2 - REALLY, REALLY hard. If you can't handle level 2 then play level 1. (besides we don't need all those people getting all the Hard Core XP.)

I tend to agree. Three levels, while fun to consider and allowing a greater level of customization, could get complicated and cumbersome in many ways.

Well I have never walked a mile in a DMs shoes...so I don't really know.

But it sure seems like 3 flavors of TD would be easy enough...

Player Coaches mark the Party Card...the DM turns to Cheat sheets marked 1 or 2 or 3...the rest is GAME ON!

I'm thinking more in terms of xp tracking or any administrative issues. While it wouldn't make the DMs life easier, you're right that is could just be one extra flip card. i Of course, level 3 could be rather rare... only the hardiest apply. I do like options for player types, and saw a growing gap of player levels with the increase of tokens, I would just want to discuss it enough to make sure it isn't causing more trouble than good.

And I know this group would certainly discuss it well!

Hmm... yeah, 3 levels might get to be annoying for the DMs, depending on exactly how many differences we need to keep track of. For something like the Shambling Mound, probably wouldn't be a big deal. But something like the Beholder might be crazy. Not sure - I'd have to see what changed for each level.

Kicking around some numbers - how about something like:

Level 1 = base monster stats DC saves 12 Trap damage 4

Level 2 = monster are +3 to hit, +3 damage, DC saves 14 Trap damage 6

Level 3 = monsters are +5 to hit, +5 damage DC saves 16 Trap damage 8

Hmm... ALMOST sounds good.

I think the third level should be changed to Save DC 28... (Dex can stay at 16)

Fortitude and Iron will - gives me +9 Fortitude and +16 Will!!!

=D

So anyway - once I get the eBay Ring of Regeneration...I'd like to trade it to someone who can get me some PURPS I am looking for.

I'm looking for chippie versions of:

+2 Great Axe
Gloves of Dex

Or maybe one of the two and a horn of plenty and some reds...or even a Girdle...

I dunno - let's talk.

Actually, there is a way to have 3 levels that is easier on the DMs than the current way things are done with 2 levels.

Implement Hardcore penalties on Party Cards exclusively and have them computed along with the normal Player Coach bonus computation. ;)

EDIT: In fact, we already have a logical way to implement 3 levels on a Player/Party Card: Levels.

Player Characters are Level 3 right? What about lower levels for higher difficulty...

As an example, how about this:

[glow=blue,2,300]Hardcore[/glow], players are Level 2.
All players have 1/3 less HPs, Wizard has 8HPs, Barbarian has 14HPs, Cleric has 11HPs.
All players suffer a -2 to Hit / -2 Damage / -2AC / -2 Saves

[glow=red,2,300]Nightmare[/glow], players are Level 1!
All players have 2/3 less HPs, Wizard has 4HPs!, Barbarain has 7HPs, Cleric has 6HPs
All players suffer a -4 to Hit / -4 Damage / -4 AC / -4 Saves
In other words, you better have potions of Deaths Door on hand.

And then you can move to the Player Cards and start removing the upper level spells from the Cleric/Druid and Lay-hands abilities from the Paladin, etc.

When a party walks into the room, the only thing the DM needs to know is "Where is the Party Card?". Everything else is already done for them.
Actually, if you are going to bump down the levels of the characters, you'd also have to have new character cards for the spellcasters... reduction in levels for them means less spells.
That might get to be frustrating for the player coaches.

Simply mark them as used. =|
