TOPIC: New Token Ideas

Re: New Token Ideas 17 years 11 months ago #97

i agree that tokens named after individuals is great, but i too worry about the "rivalry/mess" that they might create in a wonderful event. should someone be able to get a token named for them, i'm sure it took tons more work than any of us are aware of. these are items known throughout the realm. how many of us has established a reputation like that. not me. i sold a kidney and a lung to buy tokens =D, but that hardly qualifies me as noteworthy. its just my 2gp's.

now if you guys don't mind, can someone help me push my cart to the edge of the hill?

Smak I thought you just payed token minions to do that kind of work.
Get your army to do that kind of menial work, whilst you swim through your tokens in a big vault like Ol' Scrooge McDuck! :)

I know TD is it's own system, and isn't necessarily based on 3rd or 1st Edition D&D per se... but how about some Familiar tokens for the Wizard to take into the dungeon? Any melee hits on the wizard could be determined (50% chance) to hit the Familiar instead. If the familiar is killed, the token is lost and the Wizard loses half of his/her starting hit points (in other words, could be even worse than the damage dealt to the familiar itself).

The upshot is that the familiar token might grant the wizard certain abilities/powers (to be determined). There could be common familiars (cat, raven, toad, etc.) as well as rare familiars (such as a pseudo-dragon).

Alternatively, a "Find Familiar" spell token could be cast at the start of the adventure, say in the training room, and a Familiar (stuffed animal) could be assigned to the wizard for the duration of the game with similar affects as described above.
Legally... its questionable. Morally... its disgusting. Personally... I *like* it.

I had a thought..... suppose you brought some printed back tokens with blank faces...a bit of paint, and a few stencils.....$25 and you can get a personalized token just for you. Thsi limits the number that are out there, no hard feelings because X got one and Y didn't, and provides money directly to the TD coffers. Make them an order item, shipped after the con, if you wanted them done professionally (purchaser responsible for S & H)

Now the Token Nuts can get there own uber special tokens....such as Henwy's Everful Tankard, or Jeff's Peaceful Slumber...etc

Okay - now that I'm already thinking towards True Dungeon 2007, here are a few initial token ideas, I'd love to hear feedback.

1) Ultra Rare Sacrifice Stone: If you use a consumable, sacrifice this item instead of turning in the consumable or checking off a box on it.

This seems VERY powerful, especially if someone has a Ring of Three Wishes, but it could be fun. It could be a one shot item, crumbling after one use, or have boxes on it, where it gradually cracks as the boxes are checked, crumbling after the last box. It might make a nice companion Golden Ticket Ultra-Rare next year to the Savior Stone this year - maybe part of a whole series of Ultra Rare Stone tokens :-)

2) +1 Vorpal Blade, 2-9 Damage (or +2 Vorpal Blade, 3-10 damage, but this may be too powerful), severs opponents head on a natural "20" slide. This could be 2C or 3C combo item, taking 5 +1 Bladed weapons, a whole bunch of regular bladed weapons, bunches of gold, and maybe some other stuff.

3) +1 Masterwork Bolt Endless Quiver. This could be a 1C combo item, taking X number of +1 Masterwork Bolts, and Y amount of gold/gems. It would give you an endless supply of Masterwork Bolts to fire with your crossbow.

4) +1 Masterwork Arrow Endless Quiver. As above, but with Masterwork Arrows.

#2

I caught Jeff's ear during INDY set-up...said this:

"Hey Jeff, how's about a combo item that uses the KEEN EDGE scroll...you know that scroll no one in a million years would use...have it be part of a combo that creates a Vorpal something."

By something - I mean if a person wants to enchant a dagger - POOF it is a Vorpal dagger...if a person wants to enchant a +2 great sword...POOF it is a Vorpal +2 great sword.

Downside - causes TD to make quite a few tokens...dagger, shortsword, longsword, greatsword, battleaxe? greataxe? (normal, +1 and +2 versions...)

Upside - WOW would that send collectors and gamers into a frenzy!

I like the "Charge" stone...Sacrifice is not a word a Cleric uses lightly...

I could see it working well as a one-off item - it takes the place of a charge. One thing it would really do is keep tokens in the hands of the players...you could keep that wand of lightning going with several "Charge" stones...

Cool ideas Bro.

I think Mike was saying just make one Vorpal Weapon, like a longsword, not that all weapons could made to become Vorpal in nature.

I think this would be a cool idea. Maybe for the 4C token.

um - yeah I know what bro was saying bro...that for sure is the token production friendly idea...

I'm not sure who I was talking with during set-up when I caught Jeff's ear (sorry I was on a roll) but why go with only one item when in fact the Vorpal "enchantment" could be on a dagger or an axe blade etc.???

Just something to consider - as it would be a possible way to get +2 PURPS upgraded, or +1 REDS or just basic weapons...something for all levels of player/collectors... And we have already done the single item upgrade (silver dagger) ...now why don't we upgrade potentially several different types of items with a single "enchantment?"

The other thoughs here are potentially getting around to making Holy Avenger types, Flame and Frost types, Undead banes, Giant banes, etc.

Bro

You know what I would like to see?

A CURSED item.

Not because of the collectibility value, obviously (though there would be collectors for it, I'm sure), but because we've got these cool tokens like "Identify" and "Remove Curse" which are useless at present.

I'd like to see a room in the dungeon where there's a token in sight, but unreachable... akin to the "token down the well" from 2005. The token is upside-down, so players can't see what it is, but can see the back (make the back a .com for best effect). They work hard to get it, and as soon as they flip it over, they see "Cursed Sword of Sluggishness". Perhaps players can Identify to discover that it causes the wielder to miss every other turn in battle, or discover it the hard way. And, of course, a Remove Curse is required before the item can be put down.

Other Cursed token ideas:

- Cursed Helm of Idiocy (drops wearer's INT by 2. Not going to effect much in the game, so not too deadly, but who wants to wear a dunce cap?)

- Cursed Girdle of Femininity/Masculinity (causes the wearer to change gender. Again, not a huge problem when we hve people playing different genders already. In fact, I could see this being collectible for those guys who want to play a male Cleric, or girls who want to play a female Paladin) - could also be used to good effect in a dungeon which has a riddle/task where the character's gender is relevant.

- Cursed Ring of Curiosity (The DM may tell the wearer of this ring "Hey - You really want to step on that tile/open that chest/go through that door... and the player will. The only problem I see is that any damage sustained from setting off traps should be dealt to the wearer of the Ring alone, or this item could cause some inadvertent TPKs)

- Cursed Cloak of Garish Colors (Any sentient monster must make a Will check to not attack this player first. After all, anyone wearing something so garish must die. Colorblind monsters may be exempt)

- Cursed Boots of Halfling Size (wearer must walk on his/her knees until the item is removed)

- Cursed Book of the Bard (anyone who attempts to read from this book must now speak only in Rhyme for the rest of the dungeon)

Okay. Getting a little carried away, there. But still... I think Cursed items would be fun, and could add a lot of color to the dungeon.

- Raven (who secretly wants a Ring of Curiosity)

Cool ideas Raven. Yeah, I think a cursed item is a must for Indy '07.

Heck, that could even be one of the Riddles for the room. Like a player puts on a Necklace that turns them into a goat and the party must find a way to turn him back. Or it could even be the setup for a combat.

Ring of Rage: Wearer starts attacking anyone in sight.

And now the Barbarian (or whoever) is the creature you have to fight. I would throw in a method of ressurection though or cursed party member might be a little ticked.

Hey Bro's,

I like the idea of Keen Edge Scroll being part of the ingredients - perfect! I was thinking of just a Vorpal Sword, but there could be multiple versions - a vorpal great sword perhaps? I know I'd love to see someone wielding a Vorpal Dagger :-)

Mike
