Re: what makes one a "tokenholic"? 16 years 11 months ago #133

Agreed. I have something in mind, thanks to your wickedly-evil, dungeonmongering Director. I'll see if I can share it soon. Muhahaha!

Oh I don't know - isn't every Tokenholic secretly saying inside "All your token are belong to us"? =D

How should I know? I'm not a tokenholic. :P

so how many t-shirts would we need for a "charter member" run? how many tokenholics are we aware of? after all, not everyone is on the forum.

Could you tell us what "silk screening" is?

Thank you

Silk screening - Used to be done by hand way back when. A silk cloth with rubber (plastic?) covering was streched over an open framwork. The art work was "melted" off leaving open spaces for paint to be squeeged over the T-shirt. Multiple colors each had to be done on a separate screen. I had fun making t-shirts back in high school and college.

I don't think companies do this technique anymore, too labor intensive, but the term stuck.

I get the impression that "screens" are still used and color is pressed through a mask in different layers. The technique for making the screens and the materials are different though.

Mike Bergman (one of our DMs) works for Silkworm, the company that does the TD shirts, might be able to comment on how it is done now, but I am not sure if he is much of a forum reader.

Thank you one and all. I was curious about what a silk screening was because someone was so animate about it being a big deal to have it.

I look at it as kind of purest (and I really hate the over use of the term) "Old School" way of doing things. There are tons of new processes, direct printing with dye sublimation, dye film overlay, etc. that produce similar and some times sharper results, however a good silk screen process is a beautiful work of art, Silkworm has some great examples (including the old tokens). It is just not that easy to plan everything out and layer colors, etc.

Silkscreen still stands up as a good way to print, as many business still use the method. Its drawbacks are that the screens have a fixed production cost, so if you plan on printing many copies, the cost is low and the end result very consistent. If however you only want one copy, then the cost is very high.

I can't confirm, but suspect that many of the print on demand companies use a newer method that takes the form of direct printing (kind like a laser or dye sublimation/film) and that is why they usually limit things to one color.

I am guessing a certain sign shop owner might be a better voice of authority here as to how it is really done now.... ;)
