Having a package be a little bit squishy and able to handle some shape changes does help it.

Single cardboard box stuffed to the seams with no ability to change shape results in about 25% chance for loss of content issues when things are mailed to me. In the process of notifying a shipper that I received a package without contents (not TD related).
