TOPIC: Self-Counting Poker Chip (token) Tray?

The slanted sides would make it easier to remove the coins in any quantity, would it not? Given that these are usually stationed at the teller's counters at a bank, that sounds like a desirable attribute.

My guess is the coin trays have a very different use case from Druegar’s. I’ve seen people use things like that as a cash drawer, so the slants make it easier to grab a coin or two to make change. And, it facilitates counting a cash drawer quickly at the end of a shift, when you don’t expect every grouping to be filled. As you say, they don’t fall over as easily when tipped.

I think Druegar’s main goal is to expedite transmutes. He wants to make sure that an Aragonite baggie actually has 25 tokens in it. If so, they’ll be dumped in a bucket.

In that context, I don’t see any utility to slanted sides, and would expect they’d be optional. But I’m not the ultimate user.

Another design I was considering was just a straight channel, 25 tokens long. Then the floor of the channel was raised 1/4 inch (or something) in two spots, starting five tokens from each end and five tokens wide, so that the stack sort of rippled. 5 low, 5 high, etc. We have three dimensions to work with, so the offset can be vertical.

Seen from the side, it would look kind of like “oOoOo”

And, nothing says the channels need to be rounded and form-fitting, does it? I’m sure it would work just as well and use less plastic if the channels were rectangular.

OHHH I forgot to mention - we’re assuming all tokens have standard dimensions. I have empirical proof that assumption is invalid.

When my onyx order arrived, I noticed that one of the 20-packs was noticeably taller than the others, by about a quarter, maybe a half a token. Regardless of what you do, I think you’re going to want to leave some wiggle-room. But not too much.

Before or after they were taken out of the shrink-wrapping?
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

After

The tall one was the sleeve of URs. Maybe that had something to do with it.

Most chips I have are uniform. There are a few that are noticeably thicker though.

Yeah, it’s not the sort of thing the majority are likely to notice - unless they’re using a rack that was meticulously crafted to hold a number of tokens snuggly.

I have noticed that if tokens are stacked label-to-label they are slightly thicker. I would bet that off-center labels affect the thickness too.

Not to derail the conversation, but I like the token container that Broken Token uses for its Splendid Cities game pieces holder.

They're small and modular. You could make each section hold say 5 or 10 tokens.

Here's the image (hopefully it will come through) :

I was not expecting this kind of response when I posted the picture. Public availability of the stl is not a big deal, but I would prefer to get some feedback or have a chance to print it myself to see what kind of improvements should be made to it. I am pretty sure I have your email address so I sent you a copy of the STL.

Druegar wrote: One thing I'm really hoping for with this tray is precision. If the tokens don't fit perfectly* it significantly diminishes the tray's usefulness. I need to have high confidence the tokens are being slotted (counted) correctly.

For something like this 3D printing makes it pretty easy to iterate on the design and make it perfect, although I do expect the first revision to basically count correctly at least.

I have been thinking about the slanted sides, I suspect they are done like this to make it so coins do not fall over as easily if a section is not full.

I'm also interested in trying it out if you care to share the file (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
