TOPIC: Full rod tokens

Re: Full rod tokens 9 years 10 months ago #169

I think that if it got out that Jeff was handing out $1600+ tokens as swag, the uproar from long-time supporters would be... Let's just say "noticeable."

That's a good point. Although we don't know how many Seg1's were printed, we know it was relatively few. Even allowing for more Seg1's entering circulation through the use of the Mithral Coin of Fate, there's probably less than 80.

They would make nice thank you presents for TD employees and really good swag for important industry folks.

Ooooooooh, I don't think this would happen.

I've never heard of an example where Jeff gave out sought-after tokens to "important industry folks."
He's given out 10-packs (well, a coupon for the tokens) as part of the GenCon swag bag. He's given out promo tokens to volunteers and token buyers (the year TD went to chippies, every volunteer got a random chippie token in their volunteer package, so they knew what the new tokens looked like. Once token buyers got a random (non-UR) token from next year's set as a thank-you when the modules were mailed out.

Basically, tokens have been given to people who might want them, or might use them, or might need them... but only in the "free sample" sense. Just a little taste.

Like Brad said, if thousand-dollar tokens were being given out for free (especially to people who might not even play TD), there would be an outcry from the fans.

That said, Jeff is a generous guy, and has been known to donate the occassional relic token for charity, but the community has no problem with that as a whole. He MIGHT donate a ROSP to be auctioned for some worthy cause, but I don't recall him doing that with the Ring, or any legendary.

The freak-outs over the mithral coins and the 2013 super-loot was nothing compared to what I think would happen if RoSPs were passed out willy-nilly. They're just too special. It would be a poke in the eye to everyone who scrambled and scrimped to make one.

But we kind of got off topic. I agree with the original premise - we don't really know how many will be in circulation when all is said and done. Not everyone who gets one reads the forums, and some of them are too private to share. It comes down to a guess.

I wouldn't be totally shocked if 1 ended up in the treasure box but I'd be suprised if they were handed out in any real fashion.

Yes I would be shocked if I was the one that pulled it.

As somebody who played but not too seriously last year I'd love to get the scoop of what happened and the freak-outs...

When tokens that are difficult to acquire or cost alot of money to acquire are made easily available, those who once made the effort to acquire them are prone to lose interest in repeating that level of effort.

Occasional charity auctions are reasonable.

One time event drops to the treasure box keep things interesting.

Filling the treasure box with relics just makes me want more treasure draws and makes me feel stupid for spending thousands of dollars to painstakingly make those relics. Of course when the the time frame allowed for the players to make those relics is about to expire, and there they are in stacks on the table staring at you, you have to do something with them besides leave them in boxes in the warehouse.....

Bottom line - this game needs to be about the thrill of the dungeon. Maybe token collecting provides a thrill for some of you, but for me, the thrill of the dungeon needs to blow my socks off. The tokens won't.

An Artifact recipe token was turned in to really bump up the treasure last year. The mithral coin was allowed to be turned into any token including a RoSP part 1 or HoP.

The issue was that this would dilute the value of relics and HoP or RSoP part 1 tokens. In some sense it has but I see a drastic uptick in people wanting to trade tokens. I think while there will be an initial dilution the result will be more token addicts! See, the first one is free muhahaha

I'm well aware that my opinion may be in the minority in this group.

I'm thinking about trying the basement in the next haunted house season.

I heard there were two treasure boxes last year: a regular one and a high-valued one. How did they decide which one you got to draw from? I did four runs but I don't remember getting any choice.

There were two types of boxes. There was a box with more monster bits and one with less monster bits. The overall ratio of high end treasure was the same for both boxes was my understanding.

You just picked the box you wanted. The "good" one was under a light, the other across the aisle in lower light. I didn't even notice it until Saturday evening.

"Freak out" was probably a poor choice of phrase. Many people were very upset to see things they'd paid good money for falling like candy from a piñata on people who didn't realize what a huge bounty they had, especially when their luck was worse. And I didn't mean to imply they were unreasonabl or unjustified.

Yeah a lot of tokens appeared last year but you know what, my group pulled more URs and awesome tokens than any newbie. I think it was an awesome use if the recipe and we have seen a bump of new and interested players that I'm sure we're affected by pulling a cool token and catching the bug.

Is the rod going to be available for construction forever? I've got none yet, I've got to send my darn transmutes in. For cdsmith: I will have X rods and 2.5 X rings.
