If that fails, maybe I could interest you in a plate of cheese.
So i have to say i am a little bitter about it when someone flashes 3 or more of every purple in the game (that they did not gain them in the dungeon but vultured them off of noobs as they came out of the dungeon).

I have seen a lot of trading for Purples going on in the tavern, but I am pleased to say that I didn't see anyone "vulturing" in the time I spent at the tavern. (Note: I'm not saying it didn't happen - just that I didn't see it - and I spent a LOT of time in the tavern.)

One trader was, indeed, trading for a lot of purples, and I was a little concerned whether he was preying on the unknowing, so I watched him for a bit, and also talked with some of the newbies to find out what deals he made. Turns out he was NOT a vulture. He was making some excellent trades - giving stacks of good Reds away for a single Purple - and sometimes he was even telling newbies, "I'd love to make this deal, but it wouldn't be fair. Keep your Ultra-Rare token, or go trade with someone who can offer you top dollar."

When I asked a couple groups why they traded with him, some said that he had actually given them Very Rare tokens going into the dungeon, and asked for nothing in return. He just wanted to see them come out alive. So of course, when they came out with good trading stock and wanted to do business, they went to him.

I can't say that's how all the traders operate, but of those I know with large supplies of purples, I don't begrudge them their stash.

I save my grudges for people like the guy who took the +2 Great Axe in your first group. That was just rude.

I can certainly understand your sentiments. It is a problem when people in a party just assume they can take whatever they find without regard to the party, and I understand about people who take advantage of new players. Unfortunately that will probably always be a part of the world. Best of luck to you.

Sometimes I wonder if some of these items might not become components at a future time in Jeff's imagination for really special items. ie common long sword + scroll of detect undead + sapphire + scroll of enchant item + or whatever combination or recipe to make a +1 sword/+3 versus undead. Stuff like that could be endless and you might have to collect tokens from several years to make that mace of disruption, etc. Then maybe it could only be crafted in the dungeon by a MU trapped there for centuries, and you have to figure the puzzle to release him and you have to have all the common items there, and it is the last room so you can't use the item until next year. Then commons and rares could grow into more valuable components, etc etc.

Anyway, best of luck to you getting a purp you can use.

I did see probably the same trader Raven did, but he really was giving far more deals to parties rather than taking advantage of them. I know he probably ended up with most all of the purps, but part of the TD experience is the trading aspect.

Widseth
Lori, you really are amazing. And I like the way you do it. I wouldn't be able to just weigh out the browns either.

See, that's just the OCD peeking out in me! I HAVE to count them and then I KNOW each person is getting the right amount. Jeff just doesn't see it that way, so that's why I tell him to stay the H311 outta my token sorting/bagging/packing/shipping. He just doesn't GET it! I'm glad someone understands me!

I'm a practical sort of person. I figure the best method of distribution is the one that gets me everything I want :P.

Good God, you just crack me up! There's nothing else to say, you just crack me up.

That's it for today, I'm going home!

Lori

I actually had an bit of an unpleasant experience with selling a Purple. My group found our one and only Purple, a 500 GP gem, but at the time nobody had enough tokens or gold to reimburse the rest of the group for it, so I went to the Magic Shop to sell it and divide the gold. The guy running the Magic Shop looked at it and said he'd give me a bonus because it was purple, then gave me the 500 GP and threw in a couple of common tokens, not quite the bonus I'd expected. Then - with me still standing there in front of him, he held it up and said "My first purple, I'm going to make a lot of money selling this on Ebay!". I was surprised that he had bought it for himself rather than the shop, and I thought it was a bit rude to gloat about getting it from me while I was still standing there.

I'm sure he was the exception to the rule though, and every other True Dungeon experience I've had has been wonderful!

Regarding the Token Distribution, my commons were a wide range, I got as many as 19 (small shield) and as few as 3 (anti-toxin and holy water). The rares and very rares were equally wide in variance, I had 9 of one rare and 7 of one very rare, and plenty of others that I didn't get any of. But having a wide variance in distribution doesn't bother me actually, it makes it more interesting and exciting than just getting exactly the same quantity of everything - as long as some of the ones I get a lot of are nice :-)

I don't even bother to count and sort commons anymore other than in piles of equip/gear, consumables, and gold/gems.The latter goes into the money bag and the rest get shuffled about. Frankly, I don't want to know how many more daggers or shortswords I've gotten. It would probaly just fuel mad scientist-like plots to get rid of them.

MSteele: Please let one of the directors know who that volunteer was, as that behavior is strictly forbidden(at least as I understand it). Hopefully, he/she was just kidding.

I bet it was a joke - mainly because I ended up with a 500GP gem which I bought from the shop some time later...not saying it is the same one....but I was really keeping an ear open for PURPS in the shop.

I just pm'ed him with the Tavern Directors email, so he could share the details of what happened.
And like I said in the pm and echo Apetryx comment, I hope that it was a joke. Albiet a very poor and tasteless one, but hopefully just a joke. Either way, it would be good to get the details out to a director. So that even in the best of circumstances that it was a joke, that they can be coached on appropriate jesting. Clearly Ebay is not in theme, and breaks the illusion. And such jests should not be while in role as a shop keeper.

While the attitude bothers me, if the person traded with their own tokens, they really can do with them what they want.

It would be very disturbing, however, to discover that they were trading with TD tokens and pocketing the UR ones they traded for, more along the lines of theft rather than swindling, although that line is pretty blurry and grey.

I would submit most of the people in those positions were fairly honest, but there always seems to be a bad apple in the barrel.

Dave

Whoa! Are you sure about this MSteele? There were only a small handful of us that worked in the Shop and I can't imagine any one of us seriously doing something like this. Like others have mentioned, the Shop Keeper was probably joking.

Not being a volunteer, but having been around the shop alot I can atest to the fact that the one guy that was in the magic shop alot had a pretty wry sense of humor... I would wager that he was joking...
