Here is the latest version of the token mat. I added some suggested text at the top, and move the Wrist/Hand/Finger circles around.

Hi Jeff,

Is there a need to mention how to know which tokens are permanent, which are consumable, and which have charge counters showing how many uses it has (and what the charge counters look like and mean)? From what I've seen there is sometimes confusion with newer players that they have to hand some tokens in after using them.

I like the reorder of the slots on the right side. Would it be possible to have the arm point down. That will make the direction of the arm match the listed slots.

I don't think there will be too much problem with getting the stats figured out with the above sheet. After 3 or 4 times looking at the sheet the coaches will know what to look for and where it is to jot the stats down.

I can see either side being fast and easy to use but the character image side will take a few tries to get used to.
You can't fix stupid but you can TPK it.

Jeff,

Under "Pick a Character Class", should you mention that there can only be one of each type of character in the group? And maybe that players of a certain XP level have first choice? Maybe some wording about choosing the characters as a team so that people as much as possible have character classes that fit them and that they are best at? I know there's not room there for all of this, but it might be nice to mention that some character classes involve memorization (Wizards, Cleric, Bard, Druid), the Rogue a physical skill test, and others skill in sliding pucks.

I really like the "what to do before your coach arrives" checklist! I foresee this speeding things up, especially with new players.

2 comments:

1) Under "Pick a Class" I would also note that it depends on the other players. It's not just personal preference and tokens. Like the token-trading, it's a team effort. Maybe include something to the effect of:

"You are only allowed 1 of each class in your party, so ask the other players their preferences, too. Some people may have the skills or equipment for playing a certain class, and you want to build the strongest team possible." [EDIT: I see Mike also adressed this]

2) Under "Affix Hit Point counter and Light" I would actually bullet-point those 2 steps.
- Get a clip with a light on it, and
- Get a clip with NO light on it.
These will function as your hit point trackers. Place them like this...

We regularly had people taking a light AND two clips for trackers, or just a light, or nothing at all. There's a lot of stuff going on, and bullet-points stand out as easy-to-read instructions.

Here is the latest version of the Token Explanation Sign. Thanks for the feedback on the Player Checklist, too. More changes coming to that...

Equipping Mat Feedback:

Since you can have 5 Ioun Stones, please add two more circles.

Since you can have 3 Charms, please add one more circle.

I would also suggest adding a few circles in the open space on the right hand side for "Specials" that don't fit in any slot - for things like parts from the Rod of Seven Parts which effect your stats, but are slotless.

Oh, yeah. The light & HP tracker. Definite confusion.

Probably helpful to have a hefty-sized, jumbo-mini-cup of both of them in the first room. Plenty of people seem to somehow escape coaching without them.

Even two additional tiny circles might help indicate a max of five.

Jeff covered that very early in this pretty long thread. This side of the mat is just for people that are newer to TD and only have a pack or two of tokens. It has a more limited amount of slots for tokens because Jeff didn't want to overwhelm newer players, or make them feel badly because they had so few of the possible slots.

For people with more tokens than the beginning side can accomodate, the mat flips over and that side is much more extensive for people with a LOT of tokens :)
