Most players will get cooked at this time...even if they make their saving throw..

.. is what I still have issues with. So, we're basically bringing along a Wizard for two or three rounds worth of Magic Missiles before Smoak kills him outright. (This is hoping that he has an UR Staff)

Rings of the Ram... I'd love to pick up a couple of these, but as far as I can tell, they're pretty darn rare as well.

Oh well, we'll just have to see how it goes once we get there!
Well if Lore #19 is correct and you create the Medallion of Gaia, you might survive this first breath attack.

Only these tokens (and spell) automatically hit an Ioun Stone:

1) Magic Missile (spell, scroll and wand)
2) Ring of the Ram

No other magic effect will damage an Ioun Stone as they are highly resistant to magic (other than "force damage").

Just to clear this, the Chain Lightning (Auto Hit and save for 1/2 damage) and Call Lightning (Auto Hit and no save) scrolls will not work?

Correct...only auto-hit force damage magic affects (Magic Missile and Ring of the Ram) will damage an Ioun Stone.

How does the RIng of the RAM work? You have 6+6+6=18 in one or two rounds. Can you use multiple charges of the ring in one round or does it take 3 rounds to do the 18 points?
I am thinking he is assuming two people have it. So the first round 6+6 represent two people, the next round represents just one.

From the token guide on the ring of the ram

Ring of the Ram: This intricately wrought platinum ring summons a bolt of force that will cause 6 points of force damage to one monster automatically, and it can be used once per combat round. It allows the combatant a guaranteed hit against non-corporeal (i.e. ghost) undead, so the 50% miss chance does not apply. After 5 uses the ring quickly rusts into dust. This ring is usable by all characters, but does take up one ring slot.
Does the Ring of the Ram take up an action to use, like a Wand? Or can a player invoke the Ring's power *and* take a swing at the Dragon? And if the Ring counts as an action, can the Ranger wield Ring & Sword in one round?

(I ask because a certain foolish Trio are gonna try to run the dungeon with just the 3 of them. Right now, it looks like we've signed ourselves up to be toast. But hey - we're gonna have fun regardless)

What if you hit the Dragon with a Pilium of Lightning? Does the Ioun stone take 2 shock damage? Or weapons like the Fireseed Hickory nut? Would that damage the Ioun Stone if you hit the Dragon (or his pet on nightmare)?
I belive the stone itself does not count as a seperate enemy, and only direct slides that land on the stone on the board will damage the stone.
From Jeffs Post (bold is mine for emphasis)

Attacks Against Ioun Stones

Because Ioun Stones move so fast, it is impossible for a character to grab a stone with their hand or any other device (like a Mage Hand). It can only be struck with a weapon that lands touching the Ioun Stone area. No "to hit" bonuses affect this slide. You must land on the Ioun Stone to damage it with a melee or missile attack.

The question though could an attack that hits multiple targets, which lands on the stone, also damage smoak?

That's a good question that I'd like to hear an answer to.

Another is: if a party managed to kill Smoak without taking out the Ioun Stone...do you get to keep the Ioun Stone?

This new found information sure puts a kink into the plans. I am glad we found out about it now rather than in room 7. We might have to rethink and build for defense where attack bonuses would have been the way. For instance, forget the Necklace of the Oak, and go for an amulet of protection, etc.

Jeff: can we use a weighted net to "capture" the spinning Ioun stone. You really don't have to "hit" the stone, just capture it and prevent it from spinning.

Larry
