Well, it takes place in the Eberron setting. I know I didn't fancy it much. And I don't know anyone actually playing it, or played it much beyond the free trial time.

World of Warcraft and Lord of the Rings Online are much more popular, and I know several that play both. TD'ers even.

But, give her a try. 10 days free and all. But if you want to give Warcraft a try, you better let me know first. I call dibs for the refer a friend credit  and they'll want to know that stuff before ye get started. I've also got a LOTRO guest pass you can use as well.

I can't tell you much about DDO... but I am on WoW (Drenden server). If you try DDO, give us all a good review of it.
Legally... its questionable. Morally... its disgusting. Personally... I *like* it.

We played the free trial for DDO. We were not overly impressed. Calvin liked it better than I did. We are on WoW Argent Dawn server. We like WoW alot better. Critically, DDO came across as a work in progress at an early stage. It has along way to go and needs lots of tweaks. I'd be surprise if there were ever 100 people playing when we were. WoW is much more complete and developed and has much more detail and options. There are thousands of people on at any one time. In many ways though, WoW comes across as a glorified wandering monster hunt. Both games are very regimented and carefully balanced to ensure playability within relatively narrow bounds. That ends up taking out virtually all of the flexibility and boundless ceativity you would have in the good old antique pencil and paper game. Both games have 10 day free trials, so have at it.

I played DDO and loved it.. till I tried WOW. The graphics are very nice and the character generation very realistic but you hit a fun-factor wall pretty quickly that WOW doesn't contain. Namely, you may NEVER do something alone like chase down random animals on your way to another quest to collect things of value. In DDO you MUST be in a group and if you are foolish enough to attempt something with a group that is too small you will first of all fail, collect no xp, and no $.. and btw.. you now must go and have your armor repaired.. so you go in the hole a lot.

Initially DDO had advantages that WOW did not, like in game voice chat, and player specific views (if you were a high level rogue just walking along you would notice things others couldn't see on their screens) but WOW has now added whatever truely fun or useful features DDO had over it.. and now DDO is just a not very fun kinda waste of time thing except for creating very customized non-cartoonish looking characters.

Eh. Can't play WoW at this point. It's too cliched and I'd be forced to be condescending and snide to myself if I played.

Thank you, Heather. That sounds like the most informational review yet.
I think I'll just stay away from the MMPOLG stuff (or whatever they are calling it these days...we called it "MUD" and used a telnet window in my days).

JKW
