No and no, but excellent answers.

I know it's vague... all these damnable things are... but it's one of those ones where you smack yourself in the head when the answer is revealed. I know I did. Stumped the hell out of me, too.
How about one of my own...

Crowned White, Grey, or sometimes even Purple.
Lined for up or down.
Comforting and aggravating.
Both loud and quiet, full of the past and thinking of the future.
Who or what am I?

Birds? Pidgeons?

- they come in different colors on their neck and head (crowned)
- they line the road on the power and phone lines (I grew up in the country)
- their calls can both comfort and annoy (tweet tweet)
- they can be loud or quiet
- ?? not sure of the past and future connection?? something in a parable? mythology?

Simple answer...

Grandma

White, Grey, or sometimes Purple hair.
Faces with smile or frown lines depending on the grandma.
Grandmothers have been known to be equally comforting to smaller children and aggravating to the parents of those children.
They have also been known to make their opinions known in loud and quiet ways. Always talking about their past experiences, but looking to help the young face the future well.

If it had been 'blue' as a hair option, then I might have got it.

I liked it!
oh yes - blue would have made me think hair and not cotton or flowers or something else vertical and potentially comforting and aggravating at any given time.
