Shouldn't you be able to get some killer teacher deals?

Also, you can get MS Office for a steal as an educator, make sure you're not paying retail on that....

We're going to see if the teacher discount would help in these cases, or if it would beat them. I'll also check on the deal for MS Office.

Brian
Oh definitely... at one time, a friend of mine got Office for about half what I paid.

My brother-in-law helped me build a computer from the ground up. Then I saw the savings the after Thanksgiving! Go to an after Thanksgiving sale if you can hold on! Wow can you save a lot by doing so! Some things came out to free after rebate!

Oh I love my SK-8135 Dell keyboard! It has two (2) USB ports, and is without that one-inch "framing" of plastic wasted space about the side. I ordered one off of eBay after digging one at work. I like the mouse that came with it as well!

As an added bonus the eBay seller mailed me a Spanish version in error, and let me keep it . . . does anyone want a Spanish keyboard? If so PM me, and I can bring it to the GenCon (or mail it to you if you flip the bill).
I have a hacked copy of office. There was no way I was going to pay for the damn thing.

It definitely sounds like you want something portable, so I wouldn't worry about getting a desktop unless you anticipate your needs changing soon.

rule of thumb on a laptop is this, never spend less than $1000. Chances are if you do spend less than $1000 a lot of the features you might come to find that you wish you had, you won't have and there is no way to add them. Though everyone is different with computers especially laptops.

Also if possible with a lap top check out the possibility for a docking station. If you are unfamiliar with a docking station, it allows you to "dock" the computer at the docking station, which the docking station has attached to it things like a full size keyboard, monitor, printer, regular mouse, usb devices, etc... Good for when you just want to sit down and compute!

Most IMPORTANT! Portability. I own a laptop with a 17.8 inch screen, full size keyboard, and a lot of beef. Big mistake. I want to take my laptop places, and I find it's a little less convenient than it need be. Its kinda heavy to lug around, and it doesn't fit on some desks at school, especially in lecture halls.

my vote is laptop, and pc or mac really doesn't matter. Just look at both together (you and your wife) and see which one you both like best, and go with that one.
