I'm glad he was able to attend one last GenCon.
David

Ya, before it eventually gets sold off in bankruptcy court in order to pay Peter's gambling debts.

The Student Life Department of my college is going to host a D&D game day in remembrance of him. I'm glad there is enough of a gaming base here to do something like this.

I met EGG at the 2007 Con. Bought his books for some ideas and signatures. Said "thank you" for all of the joy his former creations inspired across the realm and into my own life, and, hopefully, the lives of my children. Seems to me that his works were one of the sparks that set a chain reaction in motion, one person after another imagining, creating, and inspiring the next person - and each providing opportunities for joy along the way.

Yeah, tear me apart Henry. Sounded too mushy to me.

Just my way of saying "thank you" one more time.

JKW

Hell, I didn't really know the guy. Only time I've ever even been in teh same room with him is at Killer Breakfast this past year. He just seemed old, confused, and tired. Not really surprising I guess considering the fact the event takes place at 8am on saturday and has always been a bit of a circus. I don't think I've ever heard anyone really talk about him as a person. It's more what he accomplished.

Out of all the various tributes and mentions, this was the one I liked best:

That's a good one, henwy. I remember those debates over rules and the multiple books, lol.

Ding! Ding! Someone record the time. I just found the first major Gygax hatchet job in a major publication. Well, okay, it's an online publication, but it's one of the big ones.

Gygax better off dead, DnD sucks

Well, that was the general takehome message anyway.

Whoa. That's a pretty harsh article.
I guess he never had a DM who actually cared about setting the game up to be less 'video gamey'.

When I DM, I give away XP for a lot of extra things - not just killing stuff. And one of those extra things is role-playing (which Jeff M does very well, even though he might say otherwise).

Whether D&D is technically the best RPG out there or the worst, it still all depends on the people who play it... your own interaction will determine more than a set of rules. And I still give a lot of props to the man who set my gaming life in motion - E Gary Gygax.
