Great looking stuff, Gary!

I'm excited about Halloween. Now the only holiday that beats it fnationally for money spent on party/decorations is Xmas!

Great eyes, DD!
Halloween sucks nowadays. It used to be a ton of fun when I was a kid. Hoards of us roaming the streets amassing giant piles of candy, trying to stay out as late as we could.

Now it's a bullshit holiday for adults so they can dress up like pimps and hos and booze themselves to death. Kids don't roam the streets without a parental swat team following after them and even then, it's only the youngest of the kids that even trick or treat and they're done before dark practically. The entire thing has gone to crap around here.

I'm teaching my kids to amass hoardes of candy, and stay out way past dark to trick'or'treat. Of course, it's easier to stay out past dark in the northern latitudes. Many neighbourhoods don't even start to trick'or'treat til it's dark out. (How can you see the cool lights in the jack'o'lanterns before dusk, anyways?)

The real fun part is trick'or'treating in the snow. Half of the time, there's snow on the ground here before October 31st.

Henwy,

You need to come to our neighborhood. It sounds like these people do Halloween "old-school".....kids roaming the neighborhood getting hoards of candy, staying out late, etc! Jeff is wanting to set up a little haunted house in our garage. The neighbor across the street is turning her yard into a graveyard...I think Jeff and Mickey are planning on scaring the you-know-what out of these neighborhood kids! I heard some talk about the lava monster table making an appearance and something about Jeff's vampire mask.......You should've seen the confused looks when Jeff had the raith(?) monster in the back of his truck. Try explaining THAT to your neighbors!

We may get kicked out of this neighborhood by Nov 1 yet!

So, Henwy, you and all your trick-or-treating buddies can come and revel in our neighborhood...it's "old-school".

Lori

Yeah; that's the way it used to be. Wish it were still that way. It's just sad.

See, that's the way Halloween should be. I don't understand why it's not like that anymore around here. It's not like I live in the middle of a city or something. It's a nice small town suburb. There's no crime to speak of and it's thought of as a great place to raise kids. So there's no reason at all for halloween to have died as much as it has.

All I can think of is that it has to be because of this trend toward halloween being an adult holiday nowadays instead of one focused on the kids. Adults go to parties and booze and it seems that's what teens have started to do as well. When I was a kid, even as teens, we'd still all be out trick or treating or otherwise roaming around and having fun.

To be honest though, as much as I like complaining about it, it's not as if I've done anything to reverse the trend. I haven't done anything for halloween for years now and the last time was when I was in chicago.

In case anyone's curious, I'm dressed as domo-kun dressed as a vampire. I managed to terrify one little and she tried to franticly drag her mom away. Most of the older kids just liked to come up behind me and bang on the box. By the end of the night, what I really wanted was a slot out the back I could stick a cattleprod.

When we lived in DE, we lived in a quiet development that was off a main road. The first year, we were mobbed by trick-or-treaters. I had to run to the store for more candy - try buying good candy on Hlloween night! Now in Santa Monica, we live in a condo with a locked gate. Halloween means nothing, unfortunately.
