TOPIC: New Star Wars

New Star Wars 16 years 9 months ago #1

Just got the new old release of the original trilogy that has the original screening of each of the movies. Going to watch the real Jabba, Han shooting first, etc. Going to be great.

What are those films being sold as "Original release" or "Special Original Edition?"

I would not mind picking them up if they are on sale someplace.

Best Buy had them all for 12 bucks each. They say limited edition and when you look at the back it has a listing for disc 1 and disc 2. So far well worth it. The music and voice make it a whole different experience.

-I dont remember R2 calling C3P0 a "sensless prophet" in ANH before.

I can now say that the "additions" that were made to the movies were worthless. Except the fact that Lucas was able to con every fan that he loves to exploit into buying another copy of the movie.

If you think I am offbased on his exploiting the fans go watch Phantom Menace again. Youll be sorry.

I did not think there was much "cutting room floor" material that could be salvaged...the movies were not big budget and not much was done to save that stuff from 25+ years ago.

Sorry to hear you feel exploited...I would put it more on FOX before Lucas...but I really have no proof either way.

Oh and dubbing in Jango Fetts voice for Bobo Fett was rediculous. It was good to hear the old Boba Fett.

We were watching a documentary about Star Wars, and my wife thought she recognized Boba Fett's voice - gotta go hit IMDB!
How is the quality of these "limited edition" DVD's with the "bonus feature" of the original release films? I've read quite a few reviews that the quality is quite poor, and I'm not even talking about the visual "defects" that are normal for watching old blue screen technology and stuff on modern TV's. Any thoughts or comments on the quality?

Also, I just started going through all six movies, and I have to say that George Lucas should have left well enough alone after making the first one. Someone could sense his serious lack of ability as a director and wisely put someone else behind the wheel for Episodes V and VI. I have to say that one of the worst lines, ever, in movie history, is "I have the high ground. You cannot win!"

I have since started in on the "touched up" versions of episodes IV, V, and VI, and I must say that Lucas has a lot to answer for. Take A New Hope for example, need I even mention that Han shot first? And even though a bantha looked like a big elephant with a shag rug and fake tusks thrown on it, it still looked a lot more realistic (and better) than the cheesey digital lizards he replaced them with. The scene where Han walks over the tail of Jabba is pathetically lame. You can see where they tried to compress and stretch Han's image to make it look like he was walking over something instead of walking around someone, which is what he did in the original take of that scene.

It is quite clear that the two best movies of the six are the two that Lucas didn't direct. Yes, he can write a good story, but he can only turn out a mediocre script. He also lacks the skill needed to direct. You can really see his lack of skill in the original Star Wars. While the movie was fun and great and all that, it is still a fairly cheesey b-quality sci-fi flick. Fortunately, I think that it was carried by the actors and the quality of the special effects (which were years ahead of their time). And, fortunately, the powers-that-be at the studios recognized the potential for these movies and wisely put someone else in the director's chair. The difference in quality can clearly be seen between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. The Empire Strikes Back is so much better than Star Wars that they really shouldn't even be compared. I really wish he had just touched up some of the obvious visual defects instead of trying to completely alter the films into what he wished he could have made. Why did he have to put his grubby paws where they didn't belong?
