Re: Celebration IV 16 years 11 months ago #13

I have a cool star story...

A buddy of mine - huge Star Trek fan was in Vegas playing alone on a Black Jack table....

Up walks a black gentleman wearing a ball cap and shades...

My buddy did not recognize him at first, but then the voice gave him away...

It was Lavar Burton.

So my buddy sits there chats about the game or what not...but does not let on that he knows Lavar...

Then an hour or so later Lavar gets up to go and my buddy says - "I like your work" or something general as he knows Lavar does Reading Rainbow and other things besides Star Trek...

He said that Lavar turned around came back and said thanks with the most sincere look/smile, shook his hand and left. I guess Lavar just wanted to sit and play cards for an hour and not be hounded...which is what my buddy gave him - even though he would have rather gotten an autograph and talked TREK...
oh - I met Tricia Helfer on the plane out of INDY one year - I said something like "Hi Six! you don't look so evil in person." I got a huge smile from her and then I'm sure I blushed all sorts of shades of red...

Priceless!
oh - I met Tricia Helfer on the plane out of INDY one year

I've seen her locally, once (her home town's a couple hours from me :) ) She wasn't all glamoured up, though, and looked like the kinda person you'd met on the street. Well, a really pretty person you'd meet on the street.
That's one of the things I like about Tricia Helfer - she's actually pretty, not just beautiful.

Since we live in Santa Monica and do film volunteer stuff, we have met, seen, or interacted with a large a large number of celebs. I don't think any of them have been negative so far. As you as you treat them with politieness and respect, they are very nice (so far!).

Brian
I guess I asked the question to see if anyone thought there was improvement over CIII in Indy. Having it in LA was supposed to make it easier on the celebs and Lucas to make an appearance, but I am not getting that. Too bad, I am really hopeful the event becomes a recurring one that I might make it to (and have motivation to) one day.

Following some of the other comments….

I have yet to figure the whole “meet the celebrity thing”.

It is my perception that many of the “official” setups require a fee (usually including a signed stock photo) to just get in line. While there are many I would love to chat with, there are few people I would actually be willing to plunk hard cash down to just chat for a few minutes with. And under the pressure of people behind me in line, I would really have to plan the conversation out to make sure I felt I got my money's worth.

For the roped off areas, it is never clear if you can just go and talk, especially when the poor actor is just cooling his heels with no one in line. I remember Ernie Hudson looking quite bored a few years ago.

I have to agree that Marc Singer does fit in the cool category, he and Dean Haglund both have gotten up (when no one was in line) and walked around beyond the roped off areas to just chat with people, that to me was an easier conversation to have than, here is your 5 minutes and picture.
Ernie did not impress me unless you get him started on his VET cause...then he will chat you up!

Marc Singer and Richard Hatch will visit and ask you really insightful questions about the industry or what we thought of things...really great to meet folks like that.

OH - highlight of my Star Wars career...I went to the "Men behind the masks" con in Phoenix many many years ago...what a blast that was...seeing Kenny Baker and Peter Mayhew toss back a few in the hotel pool!

Getting autographs there was AWESOME - I think I dropped $300 easy (and being that only Darth Vader was charging $20 you know I came home with tons of autographs...) I was bummed Warrwic (sp) Davis was not there, and I think one of the Imperial generals passed right before the con...sad.

But getting to Chat with Jeremy Bullock to the point that he still remembers me to this day...WOW too cool! I think it might have been because I had the Boba Fett poster from the Star Wars Cloud City CCG expansion set - and had him sign it...It was the only one that he had seen...It hangs proudly on the wall of my den - right next to my framed TD CHIPPIE tokens as a matter of fact!

I'll post a pic in a sec...
Awesome poster, Gary.

Where do you live, again? ... and what time are you usually home...?

No, really. I'm a total Boba Fett fan, and that's a really fantastic shot of him.

THANKS!

I chopped the top off - it has Cloud City - the Star Wars logo for the CCG and on the very top it says...

"AS YOU WISH."

It is most awesome especially being close to life size and mounted at almost eye level...

I try to out draw him - but he wins every time!

That is one guy i would like to meet. Although I had to take down my Fett standee because it was so lifelike it scared the piss out of me every time I came in with the lights off.
