TOPIC: Harry Potter Question

Re: Harry Potter Question 17 years 2 days ago #25

In addition to reading the books, I really enjoy the audio book versions (I usually read first, then listen). Jim Dale has to be one of the best voice talents out there. He did 200 something different voices for Goblet of Fire. If you like audio books, it is a must listen.

You should check out David Ogden Stiers (Major Charles Emerson Winchester III from M*A*S*H) in the abridged version of "The Cardinal of the Kremilin". It is the best performance I have ever enjoyed. And it is a good book.

www.amazon.com/Cardinal-Kremlin-Tom-Clancy/dp/074350691X/ref=ed_oe_a/104-8447087-1211109

And one of the heroes in the book is a scientist!

I can't find my LOTR cd's! I love listening to books on CD's in the car (I commute in SoCal!), but those are the only ones I actually own.

Brian
I can imagine David would be really good. I really do not like abridgments, however. Michael Prichard usually reads Clancy books, and he is pretty good. I know I have listened to Cardinal of the Kremlin unabridged, I am pretty sure Michael was the narrator.

A guy named Frank Muller is another one of my best readers, he read a number of Stephen King books. Unfortunately he had a pretty bad accident and can not work now. But his vocal talent is also truly amazing.

Jim Dale is really amazing. Robert Inglis, who does the LOTR books is also very entertaining. There is a cast of readers for Orson Scott Card's Ender books that is also worth the listen.

I have an hour drive to work and back each day so audiobooks make the trip bearable. It does not hurt that the Library has a fairly large selection on tape and CD.

I agree - I won't rent or take out abridged versions. Inglis is excellent. I've also listened to books by Baldacci and the guy who wrote the Alex Cross books (ALONG CAME A SPIDER, etc.).

Brian
Abridged audiobooks are an offense against humanity. The perpetrators of such an obsenity should be disembowled and forces to eat their own small intestines like spaghetti.

snobs

I prefer unabridged books as well, but the increased production values of abridged audiobooks make them an interesting alternative. Don't let your snobbery rob you of some good entertainment.

BTW, unless the author is someone like JK Rowling or is self-published, ALL BOOKS are abridged from the original author's work. You guys have been listening to abridged audiobooks all these years and did not know it.

:evil5:
True Dungeon... abridged.

"You enter the dangerous dungeon, determined to defeat the devilish duck of doom. You face traps. You face perplexing puzzles. You face combat. You don't find the duck but have a great time anyways."

The end... or is it.

I've got quite an audiobook collection and everything is unabridged. It's the only type I'll accept. It's not hard to find and runtime is always 12 hours or more. Most abridged books clock in at 3 or so. It's hard to imagine that there's even a story left if you slice away 3/4 of the content.

Almost all fantasy audiobooks are unabridged. Martin, Goodkind, Jordan, Eddings, Pratchett, Brooks, etc.
