Hey, all. I figured someone here could answer what seems to be a continuity problem in Harry Potter. I was rereading the first book (Philosopher's Stone) in an attempt to reread all of them before Deathly Hallows. When Harry meets Prof. Quirrell in the Leaky cauldron, Quirrell shakes Harry's hand. However, during the final confrontation between Harry and Quirrell/Voldemort, Harry wins b/c Quirrell can't stand to touch him, due to the love from Harry's mother (as explained by Dumbledore). How could he shake Harry's hand, if that were the case?

My wife thought maybe Quirrell asn't possessed by Voldemort at the time, but Ron explained that Quirrell's strange behavior grew stranger when he was travelling, so I thought that was when Voldemort took at least partial control of him.

Just thought of one thing - when Voldemort attacked the unicorn in the Haunted Forest, was he on his own, or was he part of Quirrell at the time? If he was separated from Quirrell then, then he could have just been separated from Quirrell when Harry met him.

Any ideas?

Brian
Gary,
Very funny!

Brian,
To answer your question, I think the reason that Professor Quirell could shake Harry's hand when he met him for the first time is because Harry was not in the highly emotional state like he was when he was fighting for his life at the Mirror of Erised. Those moments are the ones where he thinks the most about the people he loves.
In regards to the episode in the Forbidden Forest, I think Voldemort was separated from Quirell at that point, but I think Quirell was close by.

Kim
So Harry is a movie? Or something?

I think so. I've heard him mentioned once or twice before.

So Harry is a movie? Or something?

Something English, I'm sure of it. Mentioning professors, so it must a be discussion about Shakespeare--maybe Henry V, when King Harry routed the French at Agincourt. Though I don't remember any mirror, but he did love his men. I love that play and I love that movie with Branaugh. One of the greats. Thougth I don't remember any potters there.

Widseth

No - Harry is definitely a wizard in a book... by Jim Butcher, I think.

Yeah, that's it: Harry Dresden. In Jim Butcher's Dresden chronicles. (Excellent books, IMHO.)

That's gotta be who Brian's talking about. I don't recall any other wizards named Harry - and what's the chance of two of them having the same name?

So all kidding aside...I've never seen a movie or read a book about Harry. Are they any good?

Gary,
Please tell me that you're actually kidding regarding your last post in this thread. If not, you need to spend the time that you're waiting for tokens to get caught up on the books and/or movies. They are some of the best books I've read and I think you would enjoy them. I'm number one on the reservation list for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at my local Waldenbooks. They've already asked me to work that night giving out the line tickets to everyone. I did that for the last book launch as well. It was pretty cool. I was even interviewed for the local news.

Kim

The last two installments made me want to puke, but I've come along this far and have to see how it ends. I'm curious if Rowling will actually have the stones to kill potter or if she's going to pull a copout. Really, what I'd like is a book that dosen't suck. It's like the same sensation I got after reading book 7 and 8 of Jordan's Wheel of Time. You just can't comprehend how someone could blow such early promise.
