TOPIC: Job search

Job search 17 years 2 weeks ago #1

Some of you know, I have been looking pretty seriously for a job. What I am finding is that I am either over qualified or under qualified for those that are out there. (Not complaining, I have some leeds, just trying to find a place).

Well, I received a job offer this morning. The basics are as follows:

Pay: $2k / month + 11% commission
Hours: 2-4 per week

Duties:

Receive money into a business bank account that is in my name.
Withdraw said money and take an 11% commission.
Send remaining cash via Western Union to given address.

What does this sound like to you?
Scam. And or someone trying to avoid certain federal laws.

Personally I'd avoid it sweetie.
A while back my brother had put his dirtbike in the recycle advertising it for sale.
He had someone contact him about buying it, but said it would need frieghted. He said he'd send them a cashiers check of some sort for the bike and the cost for frieghting and a little extra for his trouble. He was supposed to wire transfer the amount for frieghting to the designated contact after he put the check in his account.
Fortunately the teller noticed the cashier check was fradulent and had my brother contact the police.
What would have happened if this had not been caught was my brother would have had a check that would have given him no funds, and he would have wire transferred hundreds of dollars to the scammer with no way of getting his money back.
When my brother didn't wire send the money the gentle tried to email harrass my brother into it, and sent an email and one supposedly from a lawyer threatening legal action if he didn't. My brother emailed them back stating that the check was in the possession of the Police and the bank had identified it as fradulent. And that if he wanted his check back he was more than welcome to go to the police and collect it. Needless to say he didn't hear back from him after it.

Companies that due large amount of money wire transfers do not use western union, but bank which are FDIC(is that right?) insured, and also have policies to protect from fraud. I wouldn't trust anything that involves you sending money from your account via Western Union.
If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
I'd do a google search on the company and any names or such that you received and see what turns up. But this sounds all sorts of fishy to me.

Oh I know it is illegal. It is pretty much money laundering for a "company" out of Hong Kong. They picked my resume up off of Monster. As a friend told me it is "A "Fast Track" position to a Federal Penitentiary." Another one replied "Wow, I bet more people who take in laundry would love the $125/hr that job gives. Then again, most washerwomen don't deal w/currency..."

Glad your brother didnt get taken by them. That would just be a nightmare.

I'm just sharing this for a laugh. My family keeps asking if I have any contacts, cause they need someone "taken care of."

The problem isn't that it's illegal. The problem is that the person cashing the check is left holding the bag. In this country, the laws state that the person who _cashes_ the check is responsible for the money if the check turns out eventually to be fraudulant. Thus, the scammers will send you hugeass checks that sometimes actually pass muster. There are some well-documented cases of people actually managing to deposit millions of dollars in checks from which they would then wire transfer a chunk to someone abroad, usually in Niger. Of course, when the bank finally realizes they screwed up (and there is no statute of limitations in something like this) you are libel for the full amount. Last story I read abotu this, the guy ended up being sent to prison for around a dozen years even though he claimed to have not known the checks were fradulant because there was no way in heck he could repay the cash. In the end, it dosen't matter.

You're liable because it's your account. If I illegally transfered money to your account, under the law, it's your responsibility to return it, not mine. It's a funny system really, but you can sorta see why the law is structured that way.

Bottom bottom line - isn't Monster GREAT for getting wonderful job-lead SPAM?!

I really liked the calls I would get saying we have a job for you - only to find out they wanted me to show up to interview for their job hunting SERVICE.

Screen all your potentials very carefully, and be very cautious of anyone who wants an immediate meeting.
