Farmers are placed and left on the board, they can not be scored until the end of the game (placing of the last tile). It can be a bit of a risk since it depends on just how much gets built up around you. You also do not get that peice or "meeple" back to place again somewhere else like you do with robber, knight, or monk. At the end of the game a farmer earns 4 points for each completed city that borders on the unbroken land that the piece resides.

As with knights, however, when land sections are hooked together more than one player's "farmers" may occupy a single unbroken streach of land. If the number of pieces for each player is the same (e.g. 1:1) then each player gets the same amount of points for each city. However, if one player has a greater number of pieces acting as farmers than the others, only the player with the greater number of pieces gets to claim the points for the cities for one "farmer"

Example 1: Gary and I have managed to place our "meeple" as farmers on a tract of land that gets joined together sometime during the game (therefor we both sit on the same space) at the end of the game we tally up the cities and since we both have one piece acting as a farmer, then we each get 8 points for two completed cities.

Example 2: Same scenario, but Gary managed to place two pieces on the now conjoined space so that he has a 2:1 advantage over me. In that case I do not get any points, and he gets to claim 8 points for one of his pieces, since you only score for yourself once.

Does that help?

Dave
