TOPIC: Disappointed... where's the fun?!

Carcassone doesn't do it for me, which I know is anathema for many geeks.  Then again, I've only played it once, so I should probably give it another chance.<br /><br />My fave German game?  Setters<br />Fave non-CCG? BANG!<br />Fave CCG?  Doomtown<br />Fave Party Game?  Probably Quelf, though I am a wiz at Smarty Party<br />Fave tile game?  Al-Hambra, or Ra<br />Fave train game?  Ticket to Ride - Europe<br /><br />Haven't tried Monkey Auto Races, though - that could change everything!<br /><br />Brian<br />

<br /><br />Carcassone drives me nuts. I've played it a couple times and I kinda like the concept, but everytime a situation occurs where it becomes impossible to fill in a tile in a praticular location (like a road dead-ending in a section enclosed by farmers fields) it drives me to disctraction. There's holes in the map! HOLES people!!! Not just holes which haven't been filled in yet, but holes which can never be filled in. It goes against every strand of my OCD being. I can barely play it because I am paralyzed with thinking up strategies which will not just prevent the other person from stealing my points, but prevent him from screwing with the order of the universe as it should be! <br /><br />Maps are not meant to have holes in them!!!<br /><br />Okay - time for me to take a deep breath. Maybe I ought to up the dosage on my meds again. Hm.<br /><br /> - Raven

<br /><br />Mmmm, hugs. Thank you!<br />No one deserves any blame for this but myself, though. I should know better than to play games with 'missing pieces'. I've done enough 2nd hand jigsaw puzzles to know what effect they have on me.<br /><br />

<br /><br />As long as the bodice doesn't have any random missing pieces, I'm sure I'd be quite satisifed! And if it does have missing pieces, well, that's for posting on a different sort of forum, I guess. Not the sort of forum I frequent. (grin)

Settelers is a much better game than Carcassone - more strategy.<br /><br />I just prefer Carcassone for a party game or casual game with friends as it is quick, and has the team-up or back-stab potential...the game in Heidi's suite was a good example!!!<br />

<br /><br />Very nice - I especially like the way it looks on the back.<br /><br />That's not too dificult a pattern is it? it looks like it doesn't have nearly as many complicated pieces as some bodices which i have completely botched the sewing of.

It doesn't have as many panels as some. It's 8 panels. I modded the pattern. They had it solid back, solid shoulders and busk closure on the front.<br />The way I did it also used 20 steel bones. You can tell that more from the inside.<br /> <br /><br />Lined with bridal satin, underlined with fusible interfacing.<br />The exterior is brocade, underlined with buckram.<br />Because the brocade likes to fray it is fray blocked and seams serged. The style I did uses 34 grommets. I use the grommet and washer style and a professional setter, makes for much nicer results. Although not made with being reversible in mind, it could be worn reversed but why would you with that striking gold skull brocade on the outside.<br /><br />But with sturdier fabrics such as twill and if for a frame that needs less support I'm sure you could do a simpler/less meticulous version.

I agree that Carcassone would be a good quick game, and mostly easy to explain to a non-gamer, but I'm still unsure myself on the farmer rules.<br /><br />Brian<br />

Well that is the biggest part of the game...<br /><br />Look at it in two pieces, Potential Points and keeping points away from your opponents.<br /><br />Play a farmer when you have 8 or 12 points locked in...then see if that forces your opponent to try and tie or beat your single farmer...if it is a tie - fine - if your opponent wants to take it away, see if it is worth it to keep escalating to control those points.<br /><br />I'm sure some out there can count the exact number of possible moves to try and retake farmer points, but I don't...it is more fun to just play piece by piece, although I do like to count into the bag to see if it is even possible for someone to make the single piece HUGE play...I've had games with the Wife where one piece will swing one of us 50-75 points...and sure enough it is still in the bag.  Those are pretty exciting games, knowing you have a breakaway single play.<br /><br />Did I help on farming at all - PM me if you want more details...<br />G
