GOOD IDEA - costume construction, totes...but I see that drawing in more of the gamer types and not the SOs that could care less...might be hard to find the neutral ground here...but then again some activities that the gamers and SOs COULD do together might be nice too.

Well... the SOs that "loved" their gamers might be interested. ;) In fact that could be the slogan... "Show your gamer some love". But then again, they probably think that going to GenCon is enought of a sacrifice. :O =D

Volunteer age limit - The general rule is 18. Jeff has stated in the past that we might consider someone 16 or 17, but only if a prior volunteer we know is able to vouch for their work ethic. We would also have to have a parent or guardian sign a waiver, basically the same one that players sign.

SPA events - I'm working on possibly doing a chainmaille earring class. And some of you might be surprised how many of the Gamer Wenches are excited about the scrapbooking events. Especially making some Gen Con pages.

I would also say too, that someone younger than 18 may be considered if the parent was also a volunteer (thus there), and able to help direct them. But if they show up on their own, 18 has to be the hard/fast rule, as there has to be some liability deference. I think Heather's son might have been helping out last year, but he worked with her most of the time.

I feel for you Gary, my son (10) begs each year to be a part of the event, but I keep weighing the distraction factor and how it might count against my own productivity. So while having a young'n there as a gopher might be useful (and fun), I figure a part of my attention would always be split to focus on his welfare in what can be a somewhat dangerous construction environment, especially if no one is looking around for a shorter than average volunteer...

We've been real lucky that we have never had a serious accident (knock wood) but at least my 10 year old is not always tuned in to his surroundings enough to avoid getting into the middle of things.

Dave

I'd offer to volunteer but my only skills are making snarky comments and complaining.

I've always thought there had to be a very smart cookie behind that facade of sarcasm.

Perhaps, but it's much more entertaining to use one's powers for evil rather than good. If nothing else, there's usually more snickering involved.
I wanted to specifically let people know about this program well in advance of Gen Con, to give people a chance to plan and/or submit events. Since some of you aren't on the Gen Con Forums, but might have spouses/sos you're trying to convince to come to Gen Con, thought I'd post this here in case there was any interest. =)

Last year was the first year Gen Con ran a "SPA" program. Desgined to be a track to primarily appeal to spouses who aren't strictly gamers, it was actually a great success among gamers and nongamers alike. Last year under this program, Gen Con ran a diverse variety of events, to include yoga, belly dancing classes, knitting and crochet classes, jewelry and cooking classes, karate classes, and a winery tour.

This year, Gen Con's hoping to make the SPA program even larger and better; with more events geared towards nongamers, as well as gamers. I'm helping Gen Con organize their SPA events this year; if you're interested in running a SPA event at Gen Con, or have any questions about it; please don't hesitate to contact me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. And please let you spouses/SO's know about the program!

Just bumping this up since we still have a few spaces left for SPA events; but time is running out, with the submission deadline of April 6th fast approaching. I'm specifically looking for people to run knitting, yoga, and tai chi (thanks Gary for the idea!) classes; but any ideas you have for running events are more than welcome. And absolutely, I'm looking for out of the ordinary events that appeal to men AND women. If you have any ideas for events, and/or want to run one, please don't hesitate to email me at marimacc@gmail.com. I can offer some badge assistance if that would be an incentive. =)

Sure you do!!!

Now, if you could only find someone to RUN the Tai Chi event, think what you'd win. :)
